LLOYD TO RIDE IN HONG KONG

After a recent move to Australia from South Africa, Jockey Jeff Lloyd is moving again. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Licensing Committee agreed to grant, subject to the usual formalities, a Club Jockey's Licence to Jeffrey Lloyd for the period 16 March 2009 until the conclusion of the current 2008/2009 racing season.

Australian

-based South African Jockey Jeffrey Lloyd, 47 years of age, has been a jockey for 32 years, riding with considerable success in his native South Africa as well as in Singapore (14 winners), Germany, Mauritius (5 Jockeys Championships), England (7 winners), Macau and more recently in Australia where he is currently domiciled. He also rode in Hong Kong during the 1993/1994 racing season, at which time he rode 9 winners from 81 race rides (winning percentage 11.1 %). Jockey Lloyd is able to ride at the minimum weight of 113 lbs.

In South Africa, Jockey Lloyd rode in excess of 4100 winners, 87 of which were at Group 1 level, including the winners of 5 renewals of the J&B Metropolitan Handicap, The Fillies Guineas (5 occasions), The Queens Plate (4 occasions), The Computaform Sprint (4 occasions) and The SA Classic (twice). After winning the South African Apprentice Jockey's Championship on 3 occasions (1978-1980), he won 6 senior Jockeys Championships, on one occasion breaking Michael Roberts' record for the most number of winners in one season with 313 winners. During his last full season of riding in South Africa (2006/2007), he won 12 Group 1 winners and in January 2007 rode 6 winners at one meeting including 3 Group one races (J&B Metropolitan Handicap on POCKET POWER, The Fillies Classic on SUN CLASSIQUE and The Cape Derby on JAY PEG).

Since relocating to Australia, Jockey Lloyd has ridden in excess of 100 winners, including NOM DU JEU in the 2008 AJC Australian

Derby (Group 1), HURRIED CHOICE (AJC Challenge Stakes and Theo Marks Handicap at Group 2 level), GALLANT TESS (Breeders' Classic and Chelmsford Stakes at Group 2 level), ALL SILENT (Group 2 Ajax Stakes) and STRIPPER (Group 3 AJC Sweet Embrace Stakes).

At the Rosehill Gardens race meeting on 31 January 2009, Jockey Lloyd was dislodged from his mount in the Parade Ring and injured his right foot. He has not ridden since that date. Accordingly, it will be necessary for Jockey Lloyd to satisfactorily undertake a mandatory medical examination prior to commencing riding track work in Hong Kong.

Although he started well in oz, Jeff won't be any loss to Sydney racing as his countryman, Glyn Schofield has proven to be a much better jockey in a very competitive market. I reckon he will struggle in HK as well.

Space Walk U dont know what u talking about Mark. Check his stats before talking. Good luck for Hong Kong Guv.

Acknowledge that Jeff has an incredible career behind him as per the stats in the article but recently he hasn't been riding at all well in oz. Maybe a recent fall and injury have not seen him at his best but every jockey has their use by date and Jeff may have reached his which is a shame because he comes accross as such a nice bloke in post race interviews. Some more stats - currently ranked 12th in the Sydney premiership with 17 wins from 190 rides at 11.1% compared to Schofileds 42 wins from 242 rides at 6.7%. Not talking through my pocket eithermate (for a change) as both the SA boys have rode plenty of winners for me in Sydney. You guys can certainly ride. Kevin Shea is another one of my fav jocks.

Mark I think that it is sad that people like you even need to make comments. There are few jockeys in this world that have better stats then The Guv, as for recent times Jeff has had a very stop start season with suspension and not one but two falls leaving him with a broken hand and then a broken foot. Yes his fellow countryman is doing well but how many Group ones and premierships has he won in his long career????? You cannot compare. I wish Jeff all the best and just by being accepted into Hong Kong shows that the stewards there know a true champion and at the age of 47 I believe he still has alot to offer. Good Luck Mate

Most of SA's top jocs rank with the best in the world. Jeff is not short of that ranking. Yes, he does have his off days but I can reassure you that he is at his best when challenged in the straight. Jeff has ridden 80% of my 27 winners to date. He must be bloody good to have achieved that with my average bunch of horses over the years.

Schofiled better than Lloyd??? That's foolish! Lloyd is defined as a TOP rider in Australia, even if he does not win frequently. But this is because most horses he rides are very bad horses, and he usually make many bad horses finish 3rd or 2nd. David Payne is more than satified with the way Lloyd rides his horses. Jeff has won quite a few important races for him, and also for other trainers who rate him as world class. just llok at how Payne is doing very badly since Lloyd is not riding. Anyway Jeff Lloyd is one the best rider in the world. I hope he does well in HK where every horse is a top horse, every trainer is a top trainer and every jockey is a top jockey. Oh yes, SA jockeys are the best in the world, the best being Douglas Whyte.
