The breed shaping sire Gone West was euthanized on Monday night.

This was due to complications following colic surgery. He was aged 25.

World class in all respects, the son of Mr. Prospector and Secrettame, GONE WEST is one of Thoroughbred racing's most successful sire of sires.

As a sire, he has $3,000,000 in progeny earnings for 11 straight years. GONE WEST runners have four Breeders' Cup victories, including JOHAR'S spectacular 2003 Breeders' Cup Turf victory and Champion Sprinter, SPEIGHTSTOWN's win in 2004.

Encompassing his entire career he has 81 stakes winners, 46 Graded winners, $61 million in progeny earnings, and some of the hottest stallion sons the industry has seen: ZAMINDAR, MR. GREELEY, ELUSIVE QUALITY, PROUD CITIZEN, GRAND SLAM, SPEIGHTSTOWN, ZAFONIC and WESTERN WINTER

GONE WEST sired the highest priced yearling filly 2002-2004. In 2005, he was the Second Leading Sire at Saratoga with yearling's averaging $500,000. His Keeneland September select session yearlings averaged $433,684.

In South Africa, Western Winter was Gone West best son at stud but there have been numerous over the years that have shaped the breed in South Africa and the rest of the world. Western Winter can be described as Gone West's best son at stud in the Southern Hemisphere and one of his best at stud.
