A VIEW FROM THE STANDS - Who am I, Part 2

"After a long ride in some kind of moving vehicle I was finally allowed to walk off this contraption and stretch my legs a little. My friend Happy was right there with me still washing me down and patting me on the neck. He really makes my life so much easier and I cannot imagine my days without him anymore! The air in this new place is harder to breath but boy oh boy when you get a lung full you feel so good! I had a few gallops here before I was told by Happy one morning that it was time to go to the race track. I felt very excited but a little nervous at the same time. What did they want me to do exactly? How will this day pan out I wondered? All these questions I wanted to ask but to be honest as long as Happy was there I was not too concerned. Happy took me walking to some big buildings at the other end of my new home. There were lots of cars and activity around the buildings.

Now I have seen horses together on the training tracks before but this was different. I had the big man come to me and place a saddle on my back with my bridle I'm now getting used to. Happy whispered in my ear that he wanted me to run as fast as I could and not look behind or next to me. I did not see anybody around me so I was wondering what he meant. As long as Happy was there I would do whatever he wanted me to. He then leads me out next to some nicely manicured lawn with people standing around. I though nothing much of it until I started seeing other horses around with the same gear on as me. This must be what they meant with racing. We are going to walk around this circle and the horse who walks the straightest and best will win? I heard a bell ring in the distance and nervously looked at Happy. He was still pretty calm leading me around by my reigns. All of a sudden a little man in Yellow and black clothes appeared on my left and tried to jump on my back. Wow, wow, wow who is this, what's going on?!?! Happy calmed me down and told me the little man is friendly and he won't hurt me at all. I let him jump on my back but I was still making sure he did nothing funny back there. After all, I was the one doing the walking here!! All of a sudden we were on a big, long piece of grass and I could see other horses cantering in front of me. This is new, I thought but I'm doing what I love. Now I get to run right?? The man on my back pulled the reigns in and said, ""Easy boy, not yet"". We got down this long straight and all the horses were walking into steel gates. The man on my back asked me to go into one of these gates too. Now with Happy not next to me to calm me down I was not too pleased with this at all. I'm not going in there without Happy!

Next something really strange took place. It got very dark and I only heard voices around me……………………… The next 70 seconds of my life fairly flew past me. Darkness turned to light and a blur of speed. There were horses running, little men shouting at us and it all became just too much for me. I then remembered Happy telling me to run as fast as I can and not look anywhere but straight ahead. I ran as fast as I could but strangely enough I never saw any other horses next to me, even though I looked…..Sorry Happy, I was scared so I had to look! I must have done something the little man on my back liked as he patted me down the neck and said the following. ""Jirrreee boy, you can only run hey""!! Now this I like, this is racing, this is adrenalin but mostly this is FUN!!!

I was taken back on the moving house to my other home where I started out my racing life. The big man was very happy when I was back in my own house and felt at ease that my first run went down so well. Still I felt that the only thing we had in common was eating but he seemed to like me so much that I did not really care. All I wanted now was to run against other horses again. It was fun the first time. I got the opportunity not too long after to run in another race. I felt pretty easy now as I knew what to expect and I did exactly the same as the first run. I RAN. Again no other horses were anywhere to be seen. I felt a little strange though. It was all over so fast. I wanted to run for longer, harder and further. Why was it over so quickly??? I got the chance to rest for a while and eat more than I could fit in my mouth. Happy and I would take long walks together and run for only short periods of time each day. This was the life I thought. Nothing could beat this! Unfortunately nothing could prepare me for what happened next.

They asked me to run again……..It was the darkest, saddest day of my entire life………………………" - To be concluded

If God had intended man to walk, he would have given him four legs. Instead, he gave him two - one to put on either side of a horse. - Montana Rancher
