Soldier of Fortune at stud in France

Galileo's nine-length Irish Derby winner Soldier of Fortune is to retire to Haras du Logis Saint-Germain for 2010 in a partnership involving Coolmore. His fee has been set at Euro 10,000.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Soldier of Fortune was runner-up in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr1 - 2.000mT) on his stakes debut as a 2yo. The following April he landed the Prix Noailles (Gr2 - 2.200mT) and also took the Chester Vase (Gr3 - 2.400mT) before winning the Irish Derby (Gr1 (- 2.400mT) by 9 lengths. He returned in the Autumn to win the Prix Niel (Gr2 - 2.400mT) in record time before finishing a very unlucky fifth behind Dylan Thomas in the Arc.

First time out as a four-year-old, Soldier of Fortune won the Coronation Cup (Gr1 - 2.400mT) over the! Epsom Derby course and distance from Youmzain before finishing second to the same rival in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud (Gr1 - 2.400mT).

A fine third to Zarkava in the Arc, he ended the year rated the fifth-highest older horse in the world. Soldier of Fortune is the third-highest rated son of the brilliant Galileo who is also sire of dual Group 1-winning miler in 2009 Rip Van Winkle as well as European Champion 2-year-olds New Approach and Teofilo.

Soldier of Fortune's dam Affianced (Erins Isle) was a Listed winner at two and is a half-sister to Group 1-winning two-year-old Sholokhov who has already sired several stakes winners from his first two crops including 2009 German Oaks-Gr.1 winner Night Magic. This is also the immediate family of 2008 Dewhurst Stakes-Gr.1 winner Intense Focus.-Frogsracing
