Zenyatta to Race in 2010

Undefeated Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}--Vertingineux, by Kris S.), winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Classic in November and a Horse of the Year finalist for the second straight year, will race in 2010, owner Jerry Moss said yesterday. Connections announced they were retiring the mare, now a six-year-old, after she picked up her 14th-straight victory in the Classic, but a trio of workouts at trainer John Shirreffs' base at Hollywood Park--including a :48 four-furlong move Jan. 6 most recently--fueled speculation that her racing career wasn't over. There is no need to speculate any longer.

"We were at the track this morning, and [my wife] Annie and I were watching her jogging," Moss told HRTV. "She seemed so radiant. So we said, ‘Let's run her.'" All but one of Zenyatta's 14 victories have come over synthetic surfaces in California, and the G1 Dubai World Cup--now worth $10 million--will be contested over the all-weather for the first time in 2010, but Moss responded cooly when asked if a trip to Meydan was in the cards for the mare. "Not sure if we'll make the trip," Moss said.

"We're open to all kinds of races, but we'll take it race by race. Zenyatta and GI Preakness S. Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) are the two finalists for Horse of the Year, which will be announced Monday at the Eclipse Awards dinner in Beverly Hills, California. Winner of the 2008 GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, Zenyatta was set to open her 2009 campaign with a start in the GII Louisville Distaff S. on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard, but was scratched after the track came up wet. She posted victories in a pair of black-type events at Hollywood Park--the GII Milady H. May 23 and GI Vanity H. June 27--before she just got up just in time to take Del Mar's GI Clement Hirsch S. by a head Aug. 9. The behemoth was an easy winner of the GI Lady's Secret S. at Oak Tree Oct. 10 in her final Breeders' Cup prep. Zenyatta has earned $5,474,580 to date.
