SOUTH AFRICAN BRED SETS A NEW CLASS RECORD IN HK

The South African bred filly, Sweet Sanette, broke a class record at Happy Valley in Hong Kong on Wednesday night as she strode away to win a Class 1 five-furlong sprint.

It is extremely rare to find filly runners in Hong Kong, a place which contains largely gelded horses and the South African-bred Jallad sired filly made it somewhat of a landmark win for South Africa's Greg Cheyne and Hong Kong trainer, Gary Ng.

There are only around 1,200 odd horses in Hong Kong with a handful of the fairer sex. Greg Cheyne was naturally excited about the win, when in contact with SAHorseracing.COM, aboard his home country bred and in record time to boot.

"I knew her from home and she has kept her explosive early toe. She won in a lesser grade at Sha Tin last time with the same quickening to leave them alone and lead as she likes, but to do it round these contours and not be phased says a lot about her," Cheyne mentioned in an interview with Hong Kong journalists.

Gary Ng was equally thrilled with the South African import, "We knew she was good and had potential, but you must put your South African horses through longer periods of quarantine to get here and then hope they reproduce their form. It's even tougher with a female in Hong Kong but this one is special."

The South African Grade 3 winner was formerly trained by Roy Magner in South African and she won four times in seven starts before being exported.

Sweet Sanette has earned HK$1,469,500 (approx R1,47 million) to date in three Hong Kong  starts for two wins and a place.

Let's not sell ourselves short... It was a new COURSE record & shaved almost half a second off the Class record. Definately one of the fastest fillies I've sat on. Well done to Highlands, Jallad & thank you to Mr Roy Magner for taking the time to call me before I first rode her, to tell me a bit about her. Well done to SA Horse Racing for producing another record abroad. Kind regards

I watched the race live and WOW what a filly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she dominated the race and they couldnt get close, looked like a stryker type ride, when the opposition got close she merely toyed with them and found another gear and took off with an incredible turn of foot over 1000m This filly is set for great things, watch this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope roy magner's clients got a good price as they have let go of a freakishly good filly. They should have rather sent her to dubai with mike de kock!!

Thanks to Greg Cheyne for the correction, some other sources in the international media also incorrectly, listed it a class record and not course record, so thanks for the update on the record. It is indeed an achievement for the filly.

Yes, I really liked this filly and I had asked Gary Ng whether I can buy her for breeding purposes before her first race here in HK. I guess she will be too expensive now. Also, I bought her full brother at the NYS 2 yrs back but unfortunately, he died of laminitis! Anthony Delpech said he was also very good! So I guess the dam is a special broodmare as that would have been multiple black types in her progeny! Does anyone know whether there is another on sale in the upcoming NYS from this family or related?

She has a half brother by Spectrum (lot 483) and then two closely related fillies lots 418 and 482 by Greys Inn and Silvano respectivley. If you log onto www.tba.co.za and hit the National Sales icon all the information is there for you.Good luck and hope to see you in SA someday.
