THE Scott Brothers’ consistently successful stallion Mogok produced a Group 3 winner in the United States earlier this week courtesy of KwaZulu-Natal bred filly Gypsy’s Warning, an achievement so well timed it seems planned! Mogok will have a 14-strong draft at the KZN Yearling Sale this Friday, 4 June.
This year’s renewal of the Sale has been moved from Sibaya to the TBA Complex, Gosforth Park, to accommodate Soccer World Cup logistics in Durban. In total 266 lots will pass through the ring, commencing at 11am.
Breeder Robin Scott, chuffed with Mogok’s success, commented: “This was a pleasant surprise and he’s been a good servant to us, his progeny seem to be limited to around 1900m, they’re at best up to a mile. They always present good value. His best local runner right now is Orbison, who is a well above average stayer.” Scott said that among his own Mogok yearlings at this sale he fancied Lot 238 most. He’s an unnamed colt from the mare Teacher’s Joy. There will be more value from the Scott’s, who produced one small crop with stallion Hinton Wells, an unraced son of Sadler’s Wells.
“We stood Hinton Wells for a while, but he’s moved on to Brazil which is unfortunate becAUSe he has thrown some big, strong specimens.
“This is a good opportunity for investors becAUSe I am sure the Hinton Wells yearlings won’t be too expensive and there won’t be another chance to acquire them here. Hinton Wells is beautifully bred, he’s a three parts brother to Fort Wood but he has no race record due to an injury incurred.’’
BloodStock SA’s Marketing Manager Eamonn Cullen pointed out that the four Graded features at Scottsville last weekend were won by South African-bred runners in the company of overseas-breds. KZN-bred Kahal (Chocolicious), Captain Al (Captain’s Gal) and Toreador (Link Man) will all have representatives at this auction. Cullen said: “Now is the time to buy South African horses. There is so much depth in our stallion ranks now and Toreador is a perfect example. He had a Grade 2 winner in his first crop and now Link Man has put him into the Grade 1 ranks. There are four Toreador yearlings at this sale.
He added: “We’ve caught up to the rest of the world as far as quality goes but they can still be considered bargain buys. This is one of the best sales to get quality bloodstock at a good price. It’s a good opportunity for new owners to get involved with small investments.”
BSA will be hosting a “Quiz Evening” starting at 18.30 on Thursday, a pre-sale party to open the KZN Yearling Sale with some fun and everyone is welcome. “There will be 10 tables and we’re inviting breeders, owners and trainers to come and relax for a while before the sale starts,” said Caroline Simpson, Sales Manager of BSA. “We’ll be teaching guests to do the Disci dance, we’ll have plenty of laughs!”
