Entrapment breaks Hong Kong record

With the minimum of fuss the brilliant Entrapment retained his unbeaten record in the Juvenile Sprint Trophy today, and in the process broke the record he had previously shared with others by becoming the first horse ever to win seven races in a Hong Kong season.

With only three rivals daring to take him on, the Australian

bred three-year-old son of

Halo Homewrecker had to make his own pace for the first time in his record breaking sequence. But even though the gelding seemed a bit eager early on, Douglas Whyte was never remotely worried. "No anxiety at all" said the triumphant jockey. "He's much too good for that!"

So easy was Entrapment's victory over his only serious rival, Tai Sing Yeh, that some may have found themselves wondering why the seventh victory in a season had eluded so many who had gone before him. But trainer John Size, just as impressed as Whyte by the gelding's phenomenal talent, provided an explanation. "Obviously he's a horse of tremendous ability, but he's also a genuine racehorse who really wants to win. As far as the mathematics of the seven races is concerned one of the major reasons he's done it is that he has the ability to handle any type of track. He's won twice on the all weather. He's won on good and he's won on soft."

Owner Benson Lo Tak Wing made a special trip back from Tokyo to be present to see his horse enter the history books. "I had to come back becAUS

e John Size told me there was a great chance that he'd win again, and of course this is history in the making. I was a bit worried about the pace, but John told me not to worry becAUSe Entrapment's form was so good, and he was right. Where the horse goes next depends completely on his trainer's decision."

Asked whether, after today's near exercise gallop that saw him eased down in the last 100m to win by two lengths, he might be asking Entrapment to go for a record extending eighth victory Size looked surprised. "No he's rated too high so there's no suitable race for him," said the trainers' championship leader. "He's done enough now. He'll be going straight to group races next season."

The so far unbeatable Entrapment has certainly put himself in line for the Champion Griffin title, and having started the season on a rating of only 52 he will be very hard to beat for that of Most Improved Horse.
