Darley yesterday announced that Singspiel (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}--Glorious Song, by Halo) has been euthanized after a long illness at the age of 18. One of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's finest performers on the track, the homebred was successful in five top-level contests in all, the 1996 GI Canadian International and G1 Japan Cup, the 1997 G1 Dubai World Cup, G1 Coronation Cup and G1 International S. when under the care of Sir Michael Stoute. He was also runner-up in the 1996 GI Breeders' Cup Turf and previous year's G1 Eclipse before his retirement at Dalham Hall Stud, where he established himself as one of the operation's leading sires due to the exploits of Moon Ballad (Ire)--who emulated him when taking the Dubai World Cup seven years ago--and other Group One winners Papineau (GB), Asakusa Den'En (GB), Eastern Anthem (Ire), Confidential Lady (GB) and today's G1 Coral-Eclipse contender Dar Re Mi (GB).
A statement from John Ferguson on Darley's website read, "Singspiel has been a huge part of Sheikh Mohammed and Darley's breeding and racing operation for many years. He was bred by Sheikh Mohammed, and, as a racehorse, he covered every continent. The highlight was his win in the Dubai World Cup. He then went on to great things at stud where he sired Moon Ballad from his first crop to also win the Dubai World Cup. He was an outstandingly tough racehorse who was able to pass it on to many of his progeny who performed around the world. He has been admired and supported industry-wide in Australia, Europe, Japan, and the USA where he has produced racehorses of the highest calibre. Sheikh Mohammed would like to thank all of those at Dalham Hall and the veterinarians in Newmarket for doing everything they could for him. He will be sadly missed."
