Overbrook Farm's homebred Battle Plan (Empire Maker--Flanders, by Seeking the Gold) has been sold to a group of Japanese breeders represented by J.S. Company and will stand at Arrow Stud on Hokkaido Island in 2011.
"As much as we wanted him to be sold to interests in Kentucky, the Japanese breeders simply were willing to pay quite a bit more than the American stud farms," remarked Overbrook advisor Ric Waldman.
Five-year-old Battle Plan, second in the June 12 GI Stephen Foster H., came out of the race with a torn suspensory in his right front leg and was retired. A son of champion Flanders, he is a half-brother to Eclipse winner Surfside (Seattle Slew).
Overbrook dispersed the majority of its Thoroughbred holdings at Keeneland last November, but Battle Plan was one of a handful of horses retained by the operation. He had won four in a row prior to the Stephen Foster, capping the streak with a 1 1/2-length score in the GII New Orleans H. in March. Overall, the bay compiled a record of 6-4-1-0, earning $373,143.
