Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra (f, 4, by Medaglia d'Oro), returning to the site of her GI Haskell Invitational S. tour-de-force, sat in second behind Queen Martha (f, 4 by Rahy) through fractions of :23 4/5 and :47 4/5, challenged for the lead on the turn for home, and drew away in the stretch to score by three lengths in Monmouth's $400,000 Lady's Secret S. Queen Martha held second; Ask the Moon (m, 5 by Malibu Moon) was third.
"We're very pleased with her, how she ran today," said Asmussen. "It was an awfully warm day and she kept her composure. She was very relaxed off the other mare. The first thing Calvin said when he came off her was that he loved how she came home today. I think that will be the key to her future success."
Her next start will be decided next week when Asmussen meets with owner Jess Jackson in Saratoga.
To bring Rachel Alexandra to Monmouth Park, the Lady's Secret has to be refined for the Horse of the Year. The race would ahve been held on August the 1st with a smaller purse of $150,000, however with the star filly in it, an extra $250,000 was put on had she competed. The distance was also lengthened from 1700m to 1800m.
The final time for the nine-furlong affair was 1:49 3/5.
