It must quite a sensation to first see your son or daughter step out on the race track for the first, more especially if you are a top race rider yourself. This happened to South African jockey Glyn Schofield as he watched from Randwick as his son Chad finished third in his maiden racetrack outing at Newcastle on Saturday.

16-year-old Chad was onboard the David Payne-trained Sir Gwynn making it a nice South African moment..

"I watched it inside the jockeys' room with all the boys, it was great," Schofield said.

"I was a bit nervous, obviously, but he gave it a lovely ride.

"Geez, he gave it a good ride. He got into the one-one position, he peeled out at the right time and the horse just batted away as good as he could in the straight and he ran third. I thought it was a good result all round.

"Chad will never forget it."

David Payne, a former top jockey himself, understood what it took.

"He rode it perfectly," Payne said.

"He didn't panic, he just sat nicely. I was very happy with that.

"He listened and just did what he had to do and I was very pleased with that."

Payne encouraged Chad with some fatherly advice of his own. It could not have been easy for the youngster especially when you have dad as a top rider and the trainer as one of the best your home nation has produced watching your every move.

"I just told him to go out there and enjoy yourself," Payne said.

"I told him how to ride him but I also said if you cock-up don't worry, it's your first day."
