GERMAN RIDER SUBORICS RETIRES AFTER INJURY AGED 39

Andreas Suborics, one of Germany's leading jockeys for the past two decades, with three championships to his credit, has announced his retirement.

Suborics said: "I hope to stay in racing, and at the moment hope to be of use in some role at the upcoming Baden-Baden meeting."

The 39-year-old suffered severe head injuries when kicked by a horse in Hong Kong in the spring, and has been advised by doctors that a return to race-riding would be too risky. Andreas Suborics

The Austrian-born rider had a hugely successful career in Germany and recorded victories in all the country's major races, including on Shirocco in the 2004 Derby.

He achieved fame on the international stage too, partnering A Magicman to win the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in 1996, and Silvano to lift the Singapore Cup, Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong, and the Arlington Million in Chicago in 2001.

Suborics also rode Overdose four times, including the 2008 Prix De L'Abbaye in which he 'won' the race that never was as Fleeting Spirit's stall mechanism didn't work and a false start was called.

He partnered more than 1,500 winners worldwide, and notched 81 Group race successes, including 16 at the highest level. - Racing Post
