Jockey Glen Hatt (pictured) ensured his trip from Cape Town was not a wasted one as he piloted Shezaclubqueen (SAF) to an upset victory in the Gr 3 Pretty Polly Stakes over 1100m at Turffontein on Saturday. Solarium (SAF) had to settle for second ahead of Maggie Thatch (SAF) and Extraordinaire (SAF).
Verbatim was quickly into stride and went a couple of lengths clear with La Volta, Midnight Dragon and Solarium tracking her and Variometer also prominent. Extraordinaire was next best was Maggie Thatch and Sheztheclubqueen some way back in the field.
Verbatim was tackled by Extraordinaire about 300m out with Solarium still in contention up the centre but Sheztheclubqueen was gradually finding her stride to the inside and she produced a strong late finish to run then all out of it and win going away.
The winner looked to have a bit to do on bare form and it was no surprise to see her going off as long as 25/1. She's clearly been improving, though, and there was a lot to like about the way she quickened up here. The victory was a notable achievement for trainer Terry Lowe who also owns and bred the daughter of Fan Club's Mister.
Solarium bounced back from a disappointing effort in the recent Ruffian Stakes and this was much more like it. She was not disgraced as she conceded 3kg to the winner.
Maggie Thatch came in for some late support and turned in a good effort for a maiden while Extraordinaire moved up strongly at one stae but just seemed to run out of steam late.
