PREVIEW: SINGAPORE TUESDAY 24 JANUARY 2012 - CHINESE NEW YEAR MEETING

Gong Xi Fa Cai

It’s Chinese New Year and one of the best days in the Singapore racing calendar to have a good bet!

And no better race to have a punt than in the feature of the day, the Singapore Group 3, Fortune Bowl (race 10).

The condition weight 2,000m event doesn’t have a star-studded line-up so at first glance, the race looks perfect for FLYING FULTON to continue his winning ways and pocket the better part of SGD $200,000 in prizemoney on offer.

The FLYING SPUR 5YO made light work of the ‘calendar’ New Year feature and can make it a festive double in the ‘lunar’ version as he meets most of his rivals from that race better off at the weights.

And even at second glance the likes of POWER BLITZ, PARFUMIER, FAT KID, SOUTH EASTER, TENZING and JOYFUL HEART MAN don’t look to have the improvement in them from that race to turn the tables.

So while nothing is certain in racing, FLYING FULTON looks hard to beat and a great way to start the Chinese New Year.

There are six races on the card from Singapore, a mixed surface meeting with races 8 and 11 on the all-weather Polytrack and races 7, 9, 10 and 12 on the Short Course (B), Turf.

Best Bets; GOLD PYRAMID (Race 7, win), FLYING FULTON (race 10, win) and SARATOGA (race 12, each-way).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 9 (1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 12) race 10 (1), race 11 (4, 5 and 7) and race 12 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10).

Please note the odds listed are "reference odds" only.

RACE 7: LUNAR NEW YEAR HANDICAP CLASS 4 (3) - 1400M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 15:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "Very hard to know where to start in this race with a few from the 'black book' ready to win and good form from top to (almost) bottom. And when you have eight horses with winning hopes, finding the winner will obviously be tough. Oddly, GOLDEN PYRAMID is our top pick, given he is coming into this race after putting in a shocker with support at his last start. But the fact the stipes were having a long look at the ride (and the stipe form has more than held up of late) and the horse returned with 'debris in his trachea', we can excuse the bad run and give another big winning show with the booking of a senior hoop a factor. Like GOLD PYRAMID, FAMOUS N FAST's last start could be considered disappointing given he was beaten into third place as the odds-on pop. But he looks a nice type and the run good enough to follow in this company although this Class 4 field certainly has depth. I think the two are supported and run accordingly but would need to be on their respective games given the opposition. Others to watch include BORN TO FLY (excuses last start and looks due), HOPKINS with a handy claim and gate, LONG HAUL at likely value with special mentions to FOREIGN EXCHANGE, ROMAN EMPIRE and MAGIC ICON."

1 37234 Hopkins     App Th Koh-3 L Laxon 3 59 57.0 7.00

2 13283 Born To Fly     S John S Gray 8 58 56.5 5.00
In good form and excuses not to finish closer last start in similar affair - big show.
3 *127 Gold Pyramid     J Moreira S Burridge 6 56 55.5 3.00
Disappointing with support last start but did return with debris in trachea and a question mark on ride so pay to ignore that run and get on today.
4 00*00 Petronius Maximus     B Vorster P Shaw 1 56 55.5 100
Form average to say the least but should improve jumping from a rare good gate.
5 73567 Long Haul     S Baster L Dragon 12 55 55.0 20
Thereabouts of late and should appreciate back to recent winning trip/surface - watch at value.
6 213 Famous N Fast     J Powell D Baertschiger 11 54 54.5 3.50
Beaten as odds-on pop last start but more than competitive and pay to follow.
7 19452 Foreign Exchange     D Beasley L Laxon 5 53 54.0 7.00
Eye-catching run last start and step up to 1400m looks ideal - huge show in what is race with depth.
8 13465 Magic Icon     I Santana C Brown 9 50 52.5 30
Drops back in distance but the 1400m looks suitable first up and could surprise.
9 51627 Roman Empire     O Placais M Freedman 4 48 51.5 12
Shown at his last few he wins in this company and yet another to keep safe in what is a very good field.
10 9707* Prussian Jack     S Sam D Hill 7 46 50.5 200
Fair last start but needs Class 5.
11 58960 Ice Age     App M Firdaus-3 Zl Mok 2 45 50.0 100
Reassess Class 5.
12 894 Ss The Sprinter     I Saifudin Hk Tan 10 45 50.0 200
Last start better with winkers but eligible for easier than this.

RACE 8: SPRING FESTIVAL HANDICAP CLASS 4 - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 16:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "This race looks a beauty and with so many genuine chances, the winner will need a few favours and those drawn to advantage look the best option. In saying that I will be keeping the likes of CORSAGE, FAT KING and LINDT - all drawn badly - very safe and all can play a part if any luck in running. In fact LINDT, who was knocked off his feet in a similar affair from a bad gate last start, might be the value runner and certainly worth a look at odds. But last start winners, MICHAEL and KOBE TOP GUN, have drawn beautifully in gates 1 and 2 respectively and although both don't usually show a lot of early pace, the barriers will be in their favour. But early speed/tactics/luck will be very important and it will also pay to keep the likes of MY NINJA (blinkers added a factor), SADDLERS CREEK and the emergency, HONEST, all involved somewhere. A tough race with exotics likely to pay well."

1 34203 Corsage     O Bosson M Walker 10 61 57.0 4.00

2 4551* Fat King     M Zaki-1 Hk Tan 14 61 57.0 6.00
Last start win in similar affair but also drawn badly and will need luck.
3 27911 Kobe Top Gun     D Mcdonogh Rb Marsh 2 60 56.5 4.00
Hard to fault form coming into this with two wins in similar affairs and not in badly at the weights considering good gate - big show.
4 85831 Michael     J Moreira L Laxon 1 58 55.5 3.50
Backed up good run with a very nice win and a winning chnace again with gate one a factor.
5 80880 Raw Courage     I Saifudin L Khoo 5 57 55.0 100
Looks impossible on form but blinkers off and very much appreciates first run back.
6 69130 Lindt     B Vorster P Shaw 12 54 53.5 11
Plenty of excuses last start from bad gate so pay to ignore and consider although obviously needs luck after drawing badly again.
7 31874 Sky Lord     V Sivan L Khoo 3 54 53.5 40
Shown he will be competitive this grade and could sneak a place fresh at long odds.
8 85597 Saddlers Creek     S Baster Rb Marsh 4 53 53.0 12
Form starting to read just fair but this distance suits and has looked ready to win similar affair - keep safe.
9 00909 Scipio     D Beasley C Brown 6 53 53.0 50
Excuses at first run back but still needs to show more before we consider.
10 55*79 My Ninja     App Sh Low-2 D Baertschiger 7 49 51.0 20
Form just fair but blinkers added and back on the Poly in his favour - keep very safe.
11 58911 Shiny Lion     S Anandan-1 H Takaoka 9 48 50.5 30
Up in grade after two wins on the trot but have to respect winning form.
12 03102 Ace Ameida     App Th Koh-3 D Koh 13 47 50.0 30
Showed last start he handles the company but tough from wide gate and happy to ignore today.
13 10*24 Honest E1   Unfixed Zl Mok 8 47 50.0 20
Very much appreciates what was an eye-catching first up run and extra distance - FOLLOW.
14 25564 Bowie Knife E2   Unfixed H Takaoka 11 47 50.0 20
Bad gate makes this tough but always thereabouts in races like this.

RACE 9: HONG BAO HANDICAP CLASS 4 (2) - 1400M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 16:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "An interesting Class 4 event in the fact there is no stand-out and there could be a couple ready to show plenty at long odds. But in this even field an up-and-comer like ROYAL STYLE can stand up and show he has more to offer in this grade. The SAXON 3YO won on debut before a couple of solid efforts including a placing in what was a similar event last start. Oscar Chavez (fresh from a rare overseas sojourn in Dubai) is back on-board and that is in ROYAL STYLE'S favour given the wily Panamanian won on him on debut. And while the likes of CAVORTING, DANNY and OK OK look due to show their best, I think the most solid option - with perhaps each-way value in mind - is TOUCH THE LINE for trainer David Hill. The 6YO rarely runs a bad race and often at very backable odds - making him an easy horse to follow. But if keen to have some fun at long odds, it will pay to keep IWA ANTILIA and MALINGISA very much in your calculations. Both come off 'better than the form reads' efforts in OK company, especially IWA ANTILIA who might just spring a surprise at any-old odds."

1 65145 Touch The Line     E Aslam-1 D Hill 5 60 58.0 8.00

2 09738 Arapuni     J Powell L Laxon 3 58 57.0 8.00
Disappointing last start but worth another look on good effort two runs back similar affair.
3 657 Cavorting     J Moreira S Gray 7 57 56.5 6.00
Showed enough at three starts in Singapore to think he is right in this finish.
4 72*10 Ok Ok     O Bosson M Walker 11 56 56.0 10
Never looked comfortable or got involved last start and happy to think he has plenty to offer if ridden forward from wide gate.
5 153 Royal Style     O Chavez Zl Mok 8 54 55.0 6.00
Enough to like about his two runs since his maiden win to follow in what looks a suitable race.
6 15566 Danny     D Beasley L Laxon 4 51 53.5 6.00
Can be a handful at times but has ability and a winning show if he behaves.
7 35001 Perfect Kid     S Anandan-1 L Khoo 2 49 52.5 12
Broke through for good maiden win last start and that effort suggests he is competitive here.
8 88660 Malingisa     App Sh Low-2 C Brown 1 47 51.5 80
Last start a lot better than the tenth in the result book and pay to include at long odds from inside gate.
9 0006* Good Sibling     A Ng-1 Kc Yeoh 6 46 51.0 100
OK late last start but needs easier company.
10 77600 Rocky Garden     I Andy-3 S Gray 12 45 50.5 50
Blinkers removed after just a fair run of form - might need Class 5.
11 0*1*8 Secara     M Au M Clements 10 45 50.5 40
Didnt show enough last start and wait for Class 5.
12 *4109 Iwa Antilia     App Th Koh-3 S Burridge 9 44 50.0 30
Huge run late last start belies the ninth in the book and some show here with step up in distance in his favour.

RACE 10: FORTUNE BOWL (SG3)(3+YO)(CW)(RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) - 2000M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 17:30 PRIZE MONEY: S$200000

Larry says, "All things being equal, FLYING FULTON should win this. There is no doubt the FLYING SPUR 5YO is in career best form and with a few of the 'stars' missing, looks a good thing with 58kg. His last start win was impressive and although back on the turf, he meets most of these better off at the weights than when trouncing them over 1900m and it looks a matter of 'who beats him?’ Of those horses that finished behind him, I think PARFUMIER can improve and goes close at his best with POWER BLITZ, third behind FLYING FULTON last start, one to watch back on his winning surface. But they, along with FATKID, TENZING and JOYFUL HEART MAN and SOUTH EASTER, need to improve lengths to beat the top-weight and hard to see that happening. "

2 07878 Fatkid     I Santana Hk Tan 10 94 57.0 12
Thereabouts as a rule and race fit which is rare for this horse - keep safe.
3 65727 South Easter     J Powell P Shaw 3 82 57.0 10
Didnt go on with it last start but might appreciate being back on the turf and will be battling away late.
4 33534 Parfumier     J Moreira M Freedman 4 94 55.0 3.50
Consistent and looks up to this but desperately needs a result for his good work.
5 5888* Smoking Joe     M Kellady-1 J O'hara 9 84 55.0 30
Excuses not to finish closer at his last start and the type to keep a few honest in the skinny-end of exotics.
6 16133 Power Blitz     B Vorster P Shaw 5 80 54.0 6.00
Hit the line well last start and gives every indication he will handle this type of race - keep safe.
7 10640 Tenzing     D Beasley C Brown 8 76 54.0 20
Form reads badly but has staying ability and could be ready to show his best after three runs back.
8 21116 Joyful Heart Man     J Saimee Hk Tan 6 71 53.5 7.50
Did it tough at his first go in this company last start but might appreciate back on the turf - follow.
9 15421 Mitre Peak     O Placais H Takaoka 1 67 51.0 50

10 3*184 Look At Me     I Saifudin J O'hara 7 52 51.0 50
Excuses last start not to finish right with MITRE PEAK last start but outclassed here.

RACE 11: FAMILY REUNION HANDICAP OPEN BENCHMARK 89 - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:05 PRIZE MONEY: S$95000

Larry says, "This race will almost hold as much attention as the feature with MR BIG facing another test in a very solid Benchmark 89 Poly sprint. With two Group wins to his name as a 2YO, the ELUSIVE QUALITY gelding continued his good form as a 3YO, winning two and being placed twice from his four latest runs. It is a test but he does look well in with 54kg and win number six from just his eighth career start is on the cards. He will be tested though and one horse to watch is the in-form PEOPLE'S VICTORY for the Pat Shaw/Barend Vorster combination. The former Argentinean has shown more than enough winning two and placing once from his four Singapore starts to think he more than handles this company with just 51.5kg a factor. Of the others it will pay to keep RAFAGA very safe - his career record of four wins and seven places from 12 starts speaks for itself - with RUN FOR THE HILLS likely to keep them honest at value from gate two. You could also throw in the two DOT COM runners (AROWANA and CASH) in the exotics with McCLINTOCK also some hope on his good run two starts back. A good field but MR BIG the one to be on."

5 22113 Rafaga     J Moreira Hk Tan 6 76 52.5 3.50
Needed the outing when third behind DISTINCTION and should be fitter today, super consistent and goes close.
6 68589 Amadeus Mozart     App Th Koh-3 P Shaw 4 74 51.5 40
Veteran sprinter who while finding it a bit tough of late can surprise with no weight.
7 7112 People's Victory     B Vorster P Shaw 7 74 51.5 3.50
In top form and looks a big danger with 51.5kg, can win.
8 8*503 Run For The Hills     I Santana C Brown 2 74 51.5 8.00
Returned to better form last start (doing it hard) and has drawn to advantage today, each-way hope.
9 12086 Cash Dot Com     I Saifudin D Koh 3 71 50.0 40
Better than what his form reads and very much appreciates first up run with excuses.

RACE 12: CELEBRATIONS HANDICAP CLASS 4 (1) - 1400M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 18:35 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "I considered more than a few as my on top in the lucky last before eventually settling on a horse that looks seemingly out of form but, in my humble opinion, ready to show his best. The horse is SARATOGA and while he hasn't looked to have fired a shot at two starts since transferring to trainer Steve Burridge, he has had excuses and with a senior hoop on today, can deliver. He has wasted the one gate at his last two so we are hoping for third time lucky with a nice start very important to his winning chances. Of the rest I will be putting a line through SUPER GURU'S dismal last start effort and give him another strong chance with QUITE A MAN likely to be right in this finish as well. Both these horses will get plenty of support and both can easily win. For value, I will keep MARTEL, CHIEF SECRETARY and the maiden runner, FAITHFUL WARRIOR in all exotic combinations."

2 13120 Super Guru     J Moreira L Khoo 4 59 57.5 3.00
Something obviously amiss last start with heavy support and subsequently trialed well so pay to ignore the bad run and take on good form prior.
3 12642 Quite A Man     J Powell D Baertschiger 6 58 57.0 4.00
Probably should win more often for the good form he shows but hard to leave out with blinkers downgraded to visor today.
