After winning the C.F Orr Stakes last week, Black Caviar will look to extend her unbeaten streak to 19 in the $750,000 Group 1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday at 7:10 am South African time. If successful, she will match the Australasian record of the most consecutive metropolitan wins set by Desert Gold and Gloaming over 90 years ago.
The Lightning Stakes will be Black Caviar’s fifth start over the 1000 metre short course and she recorded a personal best time over that trip of 56.63 in her debut race on 18 April, 2009 at Flemington. Since then, her 1000 metre times have been 56.68, 57.20 and 56.73.
The 1000 metre track record at Flemington is held by Special who recorded 55.50 in winning the Lightning Stakes in 1988.
Black Caviar’s last five starts represent her five shortest starting prices of her career with $1.07 in the Schillaci Stakes on 8 October being the most luxurious price of her past five. Since then she has started at $1.05 on three occasions and $1.02 two starts ago in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on 27 January.
Her debut performance was also the only time she started in ‘black figures’ when she was sent around at $3.
Black Caviar is currently $1.10 with TAB Sportsbet to become the first back-to-back Lightning Stakes winner since Schillaci in 1992-93. She won last year’s race at the odds of $1.28
