With an A-list guest attendance consisting of Mauritius's finest gentlemen and ladies, the Mauritius Turf Club showed off its best at their 200 year celebration Gala evening held in Port Louis at the Champ De Mars racecourse on Monday evening.
The well organised and presented evening started with the assembly of Mauritius's finest warmly greeted by the turf club representatives and completed with a bang, however in between the mingling and the speeches, the guests got to see the best of Mauritius on show as presented to perfection by the institution that is the Mauritius Turf Club. The 200 year celebration is a worthy date indeed and the club pulled off a show of international standards worthy of a club that is even older than the city that now hosts it - Port Louis.
The third oldest club after the British and Irish Turf clubs, the Mauritius Turf Club is the oldest holding racing events in the Southern Hemisphere and it occupies prime real estate land in the city and in the hearts of the colourful residents of island of Mauritius. There is barely a place you could visit where a Mauritian is not interested in the sport, a refreshing attitude from this beautiful holiday destination.
The gala party had drinks flowing and snacks ever present with guests mingling and chatting to old and new friends of the Turf Club. The Lord Mayor of Port Louis presented an English address amongst other French speaking speeches on the night to the diverse local and international audience.
Media from numerous countries were present to cover the events. The highlight that in fact ended the evening as well, was without a doubt, a fireworks display worthy of 200 years of existence. It left the crowd breathless and stunned. This coupled with a light show against a mountain backdrop was simply outstanding.
The Mauritius Turf Club put up temporary stands towards the finish post of the grandstand and it was packed to the rafters with local fans just there for the fireworks display and to celebrate with the turf club during this once in a lifetime week of celebration.
In all, it was privilege to attend the events and an honour to be apart of a night that surely with linger in the memory of guests for years to come.
