The Gr 2 KRA Fillies Guineas, to be run over 1600m at Greyville on Saturday, has attracted a smart field and while the winner looks likely to come from a quartet of runners, it's not easy to pin ones colours to any single one of them with full confidence. One has to make a call, though, and it may pay to stick with Mike de Kock's Izora.
Second on debut before posting two easy wins, Izora was sent off at short odds to win the Umzimkhulu Stakes over 1400m last time out but was beaten fair and square by Jet Supreme, who stole a march on her and quickened away to win by just over three lengths. They meet again at level weights so there's no apparent reason on paper for Izora to reverse the form. However, the step up in trip may make all the difference. Izora is bred to go further and looked distinctly one-paced in the closing stages of the Umzimkhulu. She will prefer this course and distance, having scored a runaway win here at her penultimate start. Perhaps the biggest clue to her chances comes in the form of jockey bookings: Anthony Delpech has opted to stick with her despite the presence of her better-performed stablemate Festival Of Fire, a filly who is herself a big contender for top honours here. Lightly-raced thus far, Izora surely has plenty to come and she makes plenty of appeal from a good draw.
Festival Of Fire, as mentioned, has better credentials than Izora in terms of experience and racing record. She has two feature victories to her credit and caught the eye when running on from well back to finish second to Thunder Dance in the Gr 1 Empress Club Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein around mid-April. The soft conditions that evening would have stretched her stamina, as she made up plenty of ground before running out of gas in the last 100m or so. A mile at this much sharper track will suit her better and she is also well drawn. Bernard Fayd'Herbe is a notable jockey booking and Festival Of Fire is definitely one for the short list.
Glen Kotzen's Jet Aglow should have the beating of this field if she can reproduce the excellent form she showed in Cape Town during the summer. She was placed in three consecutive Gr 1 events, the Cape Fillies Guineas, the Paddock Stakes and the Majorca Stakes. She finished ahead of Festival Of Fire in the Cape Fillies Guineas, while her Paddock Stakes effort was particularly eye-catching, finishing second at weight-for-age to the country's top middle distance female Beach Beauty. Throw in the fact that Anton Marcus rides and she jumps from a good draw, and Jet Aglow really does seem to have all the boxes ticked. The only concern, though, is the lack of a recent run. She has been out of action for three months and, in a race of this nature, being even a fraction short of full fitness could prove costly. Whatever happens, she should be involved in the finish.
Justin Snaith's Jet Supreme completes the list of likely winners. Her above-mentioned victory over Izora was impressive and she won't be inconvenienced by this longer trip. She may not find it easy to confirm the form with Izora, the latter looking to have more scope for improvement, but she is well drawn and enjoys the services of Sean Cormack. She merits full respect here.
Looking at the rest, the enigmatic King's Temptress could make the frame if in a galloping mood. She's been bumping some strong company and her poor last effort in the SA Fillies Classic is easily ignored, especially as she was always likely to find her stamina stretched over Turffontein's tough 1800m. Prior to that, she finished third to champion Cherry On The Top in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas, having actually beaten that one (albeit receiving chunks of weight) in the Three Troikas Stakes. Consistency is not her strong suit, but Robbie Fradd has kept faith with her, and she could sneak in if she gets it together on the day.
Earth's Orbit has some decent form and plugged away for third in the Umzimkhulu Stakes last time out. However, she seems best over slight shorter and has her work cut out from a bad draw.
Lady Tatty could be worth including as a quartet kicker for those seeking a big payout, as she was not disgraced in finishing fourth to Cherry On The Top in the Fillies Mile three runs back.
Priceless Jewel hasn't done much wrong thus far and recently completed a hat trick at Kenilworth. However, she is now up in class and will have to raise her game another notch.
Path To Travel is well bred and has shown some promise with two wins and a second from as many starts. However, she is well held by Izora on their meeting two runs ago and is another one taking a big step up in class.
Antonia's Fortess and The Which Doctor complete the line-up and they both look to have plenty to trouble this field.
It could well come down to a battle of stablemates, with Izora selected to justify Delpech's confidence in her and hold off Festival Of Fire. However, Jet Aglow is capable of blowing them all away if she does not need the run, while Jet Supreme is taken to complete the quartet.
