FLASH DRIVE, WHEREDOWEGO TAKE NURSERY HONOURS AT KENILWORTH

The juveniles took centre stage at Kenilworth on Saturday with the running of two Gr 3 Nursery events over 1200m and both produced impressive winners, albeit in contrasting styles.

The Cape Of Good Hope Nursery was reduced to five runners and it was joint-favourite Flash Drive who made all the running to secure a comfortable victory. Jockey Karis Teetan had no hesitation in taking Justin Snaith's (pictured) charge to the front where they were tracked by Silk Road, Zambezi Torrent and Sunday Sun, with Tiger Island sitting at the rear.

Silk Road started to weaken from about 300m out as Zambezi Torrent moved up to challenge Flash Drive. Tiger Island also started to make up some ground but Flash Drive had something in reserve and he found extra under pressure to pull away again and win by 1.50 lengths. Tiger Island ran on best of the rest for a clear second while Sunday Sun and Zambezi Torrent could not sustain their challenges and had to settle for the minor placings.

The winner is a son of  South Africa's globetrotting hero Jay Peg out of  the Captain Al mare La Sirenne. Bred by Yellow Star Stud, he is owned by Messrs E A Braun, John T Freeman, M A Govender, W J C Mitchell & W J Rae.

The fairer sex then lined up for the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery and it was the Vaughan Marshall-trained Wheredowego who produced a very strong finish from off the pace to win going away. Confidently handled by Gerrit Schlechter, the eventual winner sat at the tail end of the field as Catchphrase established a clear lead from Kitti Cat, Smiling Mistress, Alascan Maiden and Pure Power, with not much to choose between the latter quartet.

Catchphrase came under pressure past the 400m mark as Alascan Maiden moved up threateningly. Pure Power emerged as the main threat and this pair looked set to fight it out as the furlong marker loomed. Schlechter, though, had other ideas as he brought Wheredowego wider out for her run and she responded willingly. Pure Power looked to have done enough 100m out but Wheredowego was in full cry now and bolted past in the final stages to win by nearly a length.  Pure Power was not disgraced in second while Alascan Maiden just ran out of steam late and had to settle for third ahead of Kitti Cat. The first three home finished well clear of the rest and they look like a smart trio with plenty to offer in the upcoming months.

The Moutonshoek-bred Wheredowego is a daughter of
Captain Al out of Pin Number by Fort Wood and races in the colours of  Mr A N & The Hon Mrs G R Foster.
