JET EXPLORER FAR TOO GOOD IN 1900

Trainer Justin Snaith continued his red-hot run as Jet Explorer (SAF) ran out an easy winner of the Gr 2 Betting World 1900 at Greyville on Wednesday night. Rock Cocktail (AUS) came out second best ahead of Gold Onyx (NZ) and Straw Market (SAF).

Viva Maria went out to make the running with Penhaligon and Wagner in close attendance. Hammie's Dynasty was next best, racing alongside Rock Cocktail, who slotted into a perfect position on the rails. He, in turn, was tracked by Tribal Dance, Jet Explorer, Gold Onyx and Straw Market with the fancied E-Jet further back and General Sherman third from last.

Viva Maria was quickly challenged by the chasing pack upon entering the straight with Rock Cocktail looking particularly dangerous. Jet Explorer, though, was traveling much better than anything else and once he saw daylight up the centre it was effectively race over. He bounded into the lead and had the race in safekeeping a furlong out, eventually crossing the line 2.25 lengths clear.

This was a genuinely impressive victory from the son of Jet Master and both Snaith and jockey Sean Cormack remarked after the race that the 4-year-old has improved significantly in recent months. A beaten favourite in two graded race attempts during the summer, Jet Explorer had appeared rather exposed at that stage, but he has clearly come along in leaps and bounds with the onset of the winter season. He was not among the original entries for the Vodacom Durban July but Snaith conceded that he and owners Patricia and Henry Devine would now have to re-look at the situation following this win.

The next six horses home could have been covered with a blanket, with under a length separating them. Rock Cocktail, taking a step jump in class, justified trainer Mike de Kock's confidence in him with a sterling effort, while Gold Onyx, the least fancied of the Sean Tarry-trained runners, bounced back to his best with a very promising run.

Straw Market earned yet another stake cheque and continues to hold form well while General Sherman was doing his best work late in fifth, having come from far back.
