Gai Waterhouse Fined

Racing NSW Stewards today continued an inquiry into the disappointing performance of racehorse More Joyous in the Group 1-All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 27 April 2013.
Mrs Waterhouse was found guilty under AR140(a) for having failed to report to the Stewards any condition or occurrence that may affect the running of a horse in a race.
The details of that charge being that Mrs Gai Waterhouse, trainer of More Joyous which finished unplaced in the aforementioned race, failed to report to the Stewards as soon as
practicable a condition that may have affected the mare’s running in the said race, namely
swelling, tenderness, sensitivity and stiffness to the near neck of the mare, as indicated by the following matters:-
1) On 25 th April 2013, More Joyous as reported by stable foreman Mr Dave Meijer was
very sedate and didn’t eat all morning. Further More Joyous wouldn’t pick grass and
seemed sore in the neck.
2) On 25 th April 2013, Equine masseur Mr Tom Simpson treated More Joyous for a very sore near neck.
3) On 25 th April 2013, stable foreman Mr Dave Meijer applied ice to the near side neck of More Joyous as a treatment.
4) On 26 th April 2013, stable foreman Mr Dave Meijer reported More Joyous was still sore and a little swollen in the near side neck area.
5) On 26 th April 2013, stable Veterinarian Dr Leanne Begg was asked to examine More Joyous and reported generalized soreness on the near neck of More Joyous.
6) On 27 th April 2013, stable foreman Mr Dave Meijer reported More Joyous was still not as bright as usual and had not laid down for a few days.
7) On 26 th April 2013, a blood sample taken from More Joyous which showed a slightly elevated white blood cell count of 11.5 with 75% Neutrophils.
8) On 26 th April 2013, stable Veterinarian Dr Leanne Begg reported More Joyous had inflammation going on in her neck.
9) On 26 th April 2013, stable Veterinarian Dr Leanne Begg treated More Joyous with an antibiotic injection of 40ml Triprim after a telephone consultation with Strawberry Hills Stud Veterinarian Dr John Peatfield although Dr Begg believed the inflammation in the neck of More Joyous was not an infection but most likely due to the mare becoming cast in its box.
10) At or around 7.00am on 27 th April 2013, Dr John Peatfield examined More Joyous and reported More Joyous being a bit sensitive or tender in the neck and being reluctant to eat off the ground.
Stewards fined Mrs Waterhouse the sum of $5000.
