South African jockey Greg Cheyne won the Australasian Bloodstock International Jockeys Championship (IJC), witch took place at the Selangor Turf Club, Kuala Lumpur.
A win aboard Confrere in the first leg of the IJC, The Kenilworth Cup and two second placings had the South African going into Day 2 heading the leaderboard on 26 points, 14 clear of Stephen Baster (Australia) and Lisa Allpress (New Zealand), but even though he was unable to improve on his score from the three Legs on Sunday, he still clung on to his lead to grab the honours, three points clear of three-time Singapore champion jockey Joao Moreira, who made a valiant bid when he finished second in the New Zealand Bloodstock Trophy before winning the final IJC event in the Australian Bloodstock Agency Trophy. But that wasn't enough to overhaul Cheyne and he ended up second with 23 points.
Lisa Allpress, who will take up a two-month contract in Singapore from September, was successful on JOYFUL in the 3rd leg on Sat. She had two more third placings on Sunday to finish third on 20 points.
For good measure, Cheyne booted home 2 more winners during the International weekend aboard Mystic Power (Sat) and Mystic Vision (Sun), to bring his total tally in Kuala Lumpur to 14 wins from 45 rides this year. Australian Stephen Baster who won leg 2 of the IJC on Saturday finished fourth on 14 points. Jockeys Jose de Souza (Brazil) and Davy Bonilla (France) were the other winners of the Challenge races on Sunday.
Besides a trophy, Cheyne received RM20,000 in prizemoney while Moreira and Allpress went home with RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively, and a trophy apiece.
