Preview Singapore Friday 21 June 2013

Can there be two good things in the one race?

Obviously not, but what to do when a couple of un-beaten 3YO’s go head-to-head and no one seems the wiser on which one wins and marks himself the rising star of Singapore racing?

The two horses in question - FIRST TOTHELIGN and PERFECT CHARGER - have both been equally as impressive winning at their respective first two starts and given the small Graduation field they meet on Friday (race 5), it really does look a match race made in heaven.

Both Kiwi-bred's, the two also had impeccable trial form leading into their debuts so again, hard to split.

And just like a football match, the two will have vocal supporters and it might be a case of going with your heart and cheering with the rest of the punters.

Everyone likes a grey, so FIRST TOTHELIGN may just start favourite and the John Powell/Shane Baertschiger combination is a formidable one.

But Oscar Chavez has plenty of fans and expect the cagey Panamanian to have PERFECT CHARGER camped just off FIRST TOTHELIGN in running and a battle royale when things get serious in the straight.

What odds a dead-heat?

Best Bets; DARK PULSE (race 4, win), GREAT WISE (race 9, win) and PLAY ON (race 1, value).

RACE 1: CLASS 5 - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A 1000m scamper on the polytrack for the Class 5 gallopers and whilst there is not a lot of early speed evident, a number of the main chances have been freshened and could be subject to positive rides. PLAY ON will find this much easier than recent outings, he is competent in this grade and at this journey; with Barend Vorster replacing the apprentice rider he should put in a bold showing. MAGIC DIVA with Tengku Rehaizat up has had some recent barrier trials; well weighted and well drawn she should be on the speed all the way. The stablemate BOLD BID is a maiden who showed speed over this distance last start and was run down; he is poorly drawn but with Zuriman steering and a 3kg claim, if he can get across may give them something to chase. HIS MY IDOL is a bread-and-butter Class 5 galloper, he will get back of midfield and run on; whilst he does not win out of turn he is never far away. ZAC COMMAND has been freshened; his only wins have come when Moreira was aboard; he should be running on late. Others that could show up include the veteran WONDER GENERAL, who will have benefited from recent trials and often races well fresh, the last start winner WIN THE DAY and possibly GOLFER who is resuming and could sprint well. RACE 2: RESTRICTED MAIDEN (2+3YO) (WEIGHT FOR AGE) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "A 1200m race for the Restricted Maiden gallopers. Michael Freedman has started to roll out his 2YOs and has D’ARTAGNAN - a brother to the Group winner Stickpin as well the handy Peter Moody mare, Genuine Spin. He has looked likely at the trials and should race well from the good gate with Manoel Nunes on top. Joao Moreira has taken the mount on another 2YO, HOT ARISTOCRAT from the Steven Burridge stable; he too has been trialing well and should make a good debut. Corey Brown rode both these two-year-olds in trials and he has the mount on PROSPERITY STAR whose last effort was average but previously had been around the mark in some very strong maidens. The stable mate, STAR RAINBOW’s polytrack runs from wide draws have been good; he is better served here and with Alan Munro to ride should be right in the finish. STORMY ALONG was caught wide last start and fought on well for second; better drawn here with Greg Cheyne on board he should be handy all the way and probably the one the others have to beat to win on exposed form. RACE 3: CLASS 4 (2) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "A very open Class 4 over 1200m. RED RIVER ROCK is racing very well and he won in similar class last time. Whilst up 3kg he is retaining fitness and won a trial recently; well drawn, Barend Vorster retains the mount and he should be hard to beat. MOVIE GOER is having his third run for Laurie Laxon since changing stables; the five-time winner looks well weighted here and with Moreira steering may well be able to improve on his second in BM53 last start. PINT SIZED PRINCE is another who has been going great guns since removing the head gear and moving to Michael Clements’ stables; a natural speedster he goes well for Manoel Nunes and should be in this for a long way. CHEETAH ON FIRE will enjoy being back on polytrack and over 1200m; with Oscar Chavez up he is weighted to his best but should be running on strongly. MY SHINE put in a decent effort last start; he is well placed with the claim for Tengku Rehaizat and whilst he will get back should be closing late. MANNY PACUIAO did not have much luck last start being held up at a crucial stage; he too should be running on late. "

RACE 4: INITIATION (4-YO) (WEIGHT FOR AGE) (HORSES THAT HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2 YEARS PRIOR TO NOMINATION DATE & HAVE < 9 STARTS IN SIN/M'SIA) - 1600M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "An Initiation for the 4YOs and below over a mile. DARK PULSE had every chance over 1200m last start but that was in Class 4 company and he is very well in at the weights here. He is on the quick back-up and was placed twice over a mile in Ireland; with 53kg if he has come up he should race well and be hard to beat. GREYSTOKE has blown the start and charged home at only two outings over 1200m; bred for a mile he was placed over that trip in Australia and gets his chance here despite the 58kg, hopefully John Powell can get him away and not set him too big a task. ACORDO DE PAZ put in a good effort in pacifiers last time at 1600m and subsequently won a trial; Oscar Chavez retains the mount and he should race well again. The stable mate of GREYSTOKE, KLEVER WARRIOR, has been knocking on the door but his best efforts have been on turf and he gets the 4kg claimer. VIVA RAAJ put in a poor effort last start but his previous form was consistent; he should be near the lead all the way. Other chances in an open race include G POWER, HOST THE NATION and OLIVER TWIST all of whom battle on and should be suited at the mile."

RACE 5: GRADUATION (SET WEIGHTS) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "A Graduation over 1100m sees the clash between the unbeaten pair FIRST TOTHELIGN and PERFECT CHARGER and with only seven acceptors, the barrier draws will be insignificant. Both of PERFECT CHARGER’s wins have come over the 1100m on the poly whilst FIRST TOTHELIGN’s successes have been at 1200m, one on turf and one on the poly. FIRST TOTHELIGN has led all the way in his wins, the last one being in Graduation Class beating subsequent winner EMPRESS WU whilst PERFECT CHARGER has won in weaker races by just sitting on the speed and taking over when it suited him. From the inside draw FIRST TOTHELIGN may be expected to lead and that could well suit Oscar Chavez on PERFECT CHARGER who will sweat off him and try and run him down. Of the others DOUBLE STAR resumed with a nice third and he has Moreira; the others look outclassed though ITALIAN JOB has got speed and could be a pest. "

RACE 6: OPEN BENCHMARK 67 - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "These horses often go round in the same races and the form suggests a very busy finish with tactics playing a major part in the result. PROFOUND gets Moreira back and gate one and while that combination resulted in the gelding being declared a "non-runner" earlier in the month, he looks well placed here to win. There looks to be pace in the race so Moreira should get all the favours and be right in the mix when things get serious late. FIRST SCOOP showed last start he has more to offer this campaign and expect him to be in this late with regular hoop, Tengku Rehaizat, on-board and he might even sneak out to each-way odds. SUPER VICTORY has drawn wide but a positive ride from Barend Vorster should see him lead and if he gets a easy time out front, he will be hard to pass late. Both Brian Dean runners, PHANTOM KNIGHT and IRISH FLASH, showed last start they win soon and both will be coming into their own late so some early pace will suit. For value keep LONESOME ME safe with John Powell on-board and the emergency, CASINO KING, won't be the worst at long-odds. "

RACE 7: KRANJI STAKES C (SET WEIGHTS) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "An interesting race with a few horses having excuses at their previous runs likely to bounce back and play a part. Case in point is JOYFUL MELODY who battled on OK after his saddle slipped under apprentice Harry Kassim. Corey Brown takes the ride and given his previous good form, a win would not surprise. ONE SMART CAT did it tough last start and battled on very well considering. The promising 3YO has drawn awkwardly in gate 8 but with the stable opting for a 4kg claimer in R Hasri, a bold run is expected. WORK AHEAD was in terrific form before returning a "roarer" last start and happy to think that problem has been fixed and he must also rate a big winning chance on best form. The race has depth - U GOT IT and IMACRUISER are both in the mix - with COUNTRY CLUB always an each-way show. Keep an eye on BENJI'S EMPIRE tote price as he resumes after a post-Dubai spell. "

RACE 8: CLASS 5 - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "This looks a tricky Class 5 field with a few Class droppers and some genuine Class 5 horses in form. SUPER STRIKE is a recent Class dropper and showed last start he is ready to win. The 7YO was supported on that occasion and given he had it all before him after jumping from gate 12, he must go very close after drawing a lot better in barrier two. CARUSO is a maiden bit looked due to change that unwanted status before bleeding at his last start. His recent trials suggests he will return in good form and happy to think he goes close with Joao Moreira on-board. ZAC WARRIOR is another Class dropper that improves lengths on recent efforts. He has drawn wide but usually gets back and runs on so worth a long look with winkers and Corey Brown taking the ride. BAY OF ISLAND is the interesting runner. He really needs longer to be a good thing but some recent efforts over the sprint trips in Class 4 good enough to think he could surprise and pay to keep safe. Plenty of others to consider in a race with depth including BUZET, GYPSY MAGIC and even the two emergencies. Tough race. "

13 44885 Sweet Beauty E1   Unfixed C Brown 7 39 55.0 20
Yet to be placed in eight career starts but shown enough to think Class 5 suits.
14 *5756 Bulldozer E2   Unfixed Zl Mok 3 39 55.0 12
Excuses last start and form certainly good enough to keep safe.

RACE 9: CLASS 4 (1) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "With no real stand-out in this Class 4 field, GREAT LIGHT looks very well-placed to knock in his first win in Singapore. The former Argentinean has shown plenty at his first three starts in Singapore and from gate 3, Ivaldo Santana should have no excuses and the 3YO is the one to beat. It helps that a couple of the horses that look his main danger - GLOWNIGHT RACER and DREAMCATCHER - do find ways not to win. In saying that, with C Brown and J Moreira (respectively) booked to ride, both should get every opportunity to get a result. Again, with no standout it will pay to go wide looking for the winner with ALL MY WAY, CHILLI GOLD RUN and last start winner, DOUBLE S, all with a sneaky hope. "
