NEW SEASON BEGINS

The KZN Awards Dinner was held at the Elangeni Hotel at the end of August…and oh what an evening it turned out to be!   The actual entertainment was great and the Gold Circle organizers deserve to have our hats taken off for them as they certainly went to town with the venue, food, filming and everything….well done!   The Awards given were almost a repeat of the Equus Awards with Ambleway graduates doing really well. ALONG CAME POLLY was voted the Champion Two Year Old Filly and BEACH BEAUTY was given the Award for the Champion Older Mare. It was really her year of being recognized as being such a courageous and brilliant mare, as she, BEACH BEAUTY, scooped up the HORSE OF THE YEAR title in KZN for all her amazing wins here. She had done very well in the Cape Season she won the Paddock Stakes, The Premier's Cup, beating the boys, and was 3rd in the Met but at the Equus Awards she was defeated by the star miler Variety Club for the Horse of the Year title. However at the KZN awards she also scooped the big one!   We were also thrilled that JET EXPLORER was nominated for some of the awards as he had run so well in the KZN season having notched up the Greyville 1900 and been placed close up in the July and the Champion Stakes.   Dennis Drier had a season to remember in the Cape and in the KZN season, and was voted the Champion Trainer at Summerveld - a very deserving Championship to be awarded! Duncan Howells was awarded the title of Champion trainer at Ashburton having had an amazing season of winners especially with Via Africa who was awarded the Champion Sprinter and Three Year Old Filly in KZN! Well done to both of these trainers, and their teams behind them, for their achievements, and we at Ambleway are very honoured and proud to be associated with you both.   We have started the new season fairly quietly. The Cape has been plagued with race meetings being abandoned due to the wet weather. In Gauteng the feature race season is just getting started as it hots up to towards the Summer Cup. Here in KZN there is a quieter time as horses leave to compete in some of the big races or the season elsewhere. It is the chance for all of those that need to run in the off season.

  Overseas in Europe, USA and Australia their racing seasons in contrast are really heating up. In Europe all roads are leading towards British Champions Day on 19 October (where we will likely see Soft Falling Rain and Igugu run) and Europe's Championship race - the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday 6th October (where we will see Shea Shea compete in the Prix l'Abbaye G1 on the undercard). The Arc this year is made interesting by two of the top three in the betting being Japanese horses, the favourite being 2011 Japanese Triple Crown winner, Orfevre. This horse is incredibly talented but is a living cliché of being "his own worst enemy". He has been seen to tear away with his jockey, stop running and swerve in the middle of races. An example of this came in last year's Arc when he was clear of the field with less than a furlong to go and then lost the race by easing down near the line. The formidable Japanese force will be taken on by the strength of Europe led by Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World, King George winner Novellist and the talented unbeaten filly Treve. It's going to be a fantastic race so be sure to be no where else but in front of your TV on the first Sunday in October!   We have had some winners in the smaller centres CODE RED and TRANSCENDENT, both won in Kimberley. They were prepared here for their breeders Highlands Stud and sold at the Graham Beck dispersal sale last year. The former has done so well for his connections there having been successful on 8 occasions.

At the Vaal track we scored a double with graduates EGYPTIAN and SAMMY SILVER scoring in consecutive races. SAMMY SILVER was bought by Chris Erasmus at the Ready to Run Sale and this small but useful son of Windrush has given his connections plenty to shout about. He won over the mile trip as did the son of Sarge, EGYPTIAN, who is owned, bred and trained by St John Gray. Well done to you as he has been so consistent being in the money nearly every time that he appears on the track.

  We also scored a double at Turffontein with HALLOWED and UNDERCOVER CAT both winning consecutive races. HALLOWED who is owned by Ian Van Schalkwyk has been so consistent and has been in the money often on the highveld for trainer Stuart Pettigrew! UNDERCOVER CAT is turning out to be a useful filly for owner\trainer St John Gray as she has now won 2 out of her 3 starts!   St John also won with a daughter of ANNOUNCE, TELL MY STAR. She is speedy and scored over the minimum trip of 1000 metres. This win was followed up by her running a good 3rd over the same trip. He won with another progeny of ANNOUNCE- SANS LIMITAS who broke his maiden over a sprint distance. Congratulations to you…   A horse that won here in KZN deserves following when he joins the Drier yard in the Cape this year - MASTER OF MY FATE who won over a mile to notch up his 3rd victory for his connections. The winning distance may have appeared less than his first two wins but he showed he is worth following as he travels further a field. It must have been a special moment for his owners as Annetjie Papageorgiou was there to lead him in afterwards. Apart from being expensive, he is so well bred and good looking……and he can run - a dream we all have!   The Drier team were again in the winners box with the very useful filly DANSEUSE. She has now won a hattrick of races for the Shanks Syndicate and has earned every time she races! What a filly to own and to race! This daughter of  Joshua Dancer  is certainly worth following!

    There is a long list of horses to follow that have been placed and should win soon including: TERRA NOVA, PANAMA MAN, FORMATION, BADGER FRIENDLY, NORDIC LASS, TULLYNALLY, FORT WILLIAM, ESS ELL KAY, MADAME ROONEY, ROMEO BRAVO, IKATHI, SO YOU THINK, MASTER BANKER, THE FLYING MACHINE, IMPERIAL JET, LAMORNA, LOVE STRUCK, TAKE OFF and IN MY SECRET LIFE.   It is presently a busy time for breeders being right in the middle of the foaling season, and we are delighted to have 2 fillies that have been born. Firstly, a filly out of our good dam FINE FEATHER - she had a bay daughter of Toreodor at Arc En Ciel Stud in the Cape. In KZN her daughter, STRAWBERRY FLEECE, had a bay filly at Clifton Stud by King Of Kings their resident stallion. Both fillies have the same colour and huge white stars - quite remarkable! We have one mare in KZN, our daughter of Jet Master, AIRBRUSH, left to foal her Mogok baby during October.

  Racing has its sad moments too and we are very sorry for the loss of the great stallion Western Winter...a tragic loss to all at Lammerskraal and to the thoroughbred industry! Also to the Brits family the passing of Wally, the passionate supporter of racing, who shall be missed by all.   Enjoy your racing;

  Jane Trotter.

P.S. Ambleway is consigning horses for The Ready To Run Sale at Germiston in early November. These horses are able to be seen at the Summerhill gallops on Friday 11 October. They are all progeny of both super and successful stallions including Western Winter(2),Captain Al, Tiger Ridge, Pure Prize, Antonius Pius, Fort Wood, Mambo In Seattle, Trippi and Kahal. More about them all in the next newsletter where we will be featuring these horses …….
