PREVIEW SINGAPORE FRIDAY 4 April 2014

Nothing is easy at the top.

The sprint series starts with the Merlion Trophy at WFA conditions on the Poly and culminates with the Group 1 Lion City Cup - also at WFA - but on the turf.

What makes it tough is the middle leg - the Kranji Sprint - is at handicap conditions which gives little chance to a top-rated horse clean-sweeping the series.

Not even the mighty ROCKET MAN could achieve the feat but truth be told, he probably had other things on his agenda this time of year.

EL PADRINO might just be the horse to do it and after bolting in the first leg at WFA conditions, looks a good thing with just 51kg in Friday’s feature, the Group 3 Kranji Sprint (race 7).

Like ROCKET MAN, EL PADRINO has a win to his name in Dubai and while not on the World Cup night or indeed at Group level, he has always shown immense potential and showed in the Merlion Trophy that he is top-class.

That win at WFA conditions suggests he is better than most when on his game so 51kg is a luxury and he has to be the one to beat on that form-line given he meets CAPTAIN OBVIOUS an amazing 8kg better off for a five-length drubbing!

However, three very smart types in ZAC SPIRIT, JOHNNY GUITAR and EMPEROR MAX all look equally well in at the handicap conditions with 51kg, 50.5kg and 50kg respectively.

The trio - none of whom raced in the Merlion Trophy - all look serious winning hopes and horses to follow through the 4YO series or indeed whatever paths they choose to take.

ZAC SPIRIT - who looks to have matured from a very good 3YO to an exceptional 4YO - is certainly one that punters will support but given JOHNNY GUITAR beat EL PADRINO back in February and EMPROR MAX is undefeated in five Singapore starts, the betting will be a frenzy.

Whatever the result, the race will be a beauty with one eye on bigger and better sprints in April and May.

Best Bets; (BRILLIANT DEAL race 4, win), (KIWI KARMA race 3, win) and (MY BOY JACK race 9, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (1, 3, 4, 5 and 9), race 7 (4, 5, 7 and 8), race 8 (1, 3, 4, 5 and 8), race 9 (1, 2, 3, 5, 9 and 11).

RACE 1: EL MILAGRO 2013 STAKES CLASS 5 - 1200M (CLAIMING RIDERS ONLY) (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A 1200m Class 5 for Claiming Riders kicks off proceedings. There may not be much early speed in this and this could benefit TESTING TIME. The 5YO is resuming, has early speed and with "boom" apprentice Kif Toh up, could cross, lead and be hard to run down. The blinkers go on ABYSS and he is dropping back to a more suitable trip, he ran a close up 4th over 1200m in similar grade two starts back and is always a threat in this grade of race. AFROJACK broke through after many disappointments at his last outing giving Mark Ewe a comeback win; he did win two races in Australia before coming to Singapore and now he has had some success could go on with it. SARAWI has only won one race and that was on a yielding track at Penang, however, he was close up last start in this Grade. Tengku Rehaizat has not had much luck lately but from the good draw he should race well. In the usual open Claimers affair there are plenty of other chances, Old ARAPUNI is always a threat in these, the stablemate WALTZ with Shafiq up should race well and GOOD BOSS could run a race if he gets away."

RACE 2: MR BIG 2012 STAKES INITIATION (HORSES NOT WON A RACE IN 2YRS PRIOR TO NOMINATION DATE & NOT HAD > 8 STARTS IN SIN / MSIA) (WFA) (4-YO) - 1200M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "An extremely tricky 1200m Initiation on turf with a number of first starters to cloud the issue. Of those we know, DRAGON WALK was held up and ran on well last start; from barrier 7 with Dan Beasley up, he has enough speed to get into a good spot and will be hard to hold out. MISTER CANDY has been very consistent and has not missed a place on turf. Barend Vorster should have him on the speed and give him every chance from barrier 5. BRAVE TIGER was inconvenienced on jumping and fought on strongly last start, Ivaldo Santana takes over from Mark Ewe and from the good alley, he should get a sit just off the speed and finish off well. There are a number of newcomers and watch the market is the obvious message. ORION has been entered and scratched several times; a full brother to SUPER GOOD he has looked more than useful at the trials and with Lisa Allpress up, he should race well. Mark Walker has a well-bred pair in DANE'S ANATOMY and DOUBLE JEOPARDY and whilst both are bred for longer, they could show up fresh. FLYING WINDFALL also trials well and the resuming CONFIDENCE and ROCK SHOW despite drawing wide, could race well as could the emergency MOONBEAM DAZZLER if he gets a run."

RACE 3: IRT JUVENILE STAKES OPEN (2YO) (CW) (BONUS OF $30,000 TO WINNING QUALIFIED HORSE) (RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$90000

Larry says, "The second of the year's 2YO races - this one on the polytrack over 1100m. As with all these races at this time there is little revealed form and the market is the best indicator. Of those we have seen KIWI KARMA started favourite on debut and ran on strongly from a way back to get second; She should be improved by that experience and with Manoel Nunes taking over from a good gate, is the one to beat. CONFEIGN ran a nice race in the same event and ART OF WAR was green but far from disgraced - both should go well here. Of the unraced brigade, HAPPY SAGA is by speed sire Real Saga out of a sprinting mare that won eight races, he has had quiet trials and could be the one to watch. AGELESS is a brother to EISENHEIM, he looks useful but may need time, GREAT BALLS OFFIRE is also bred for more ground being by Casino Prince and a half brother to middle distance horse RUN FOR LAYLA. An interesting runner is ROCK ESPRIT, he had two runs in Sydney before coming to Singapore but did little; he is by Bel Esprit out of Miss Charlize, a mare Pat Shaw trained to win over a mile in Singapore - his trials have not been exciting but he is worth a market watch as are all in this event."

RACE 4: GHOZI 2011 STAKES CLASS 4 - 1600M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "A small Class 4 field fight it out over a mile on turf and with the bold front-runner CHEETAH in the field, not only will the pace be true but the rest may have something to catch. Both SERPICO and BRILLIANT DEAL are also good beginners and are coming off strong last start mile wins. SERPICO scored in Novice company and goes up 2kg, whilst BRILLIANT DEAL had a nice run and finished off stoutly to win a Class 4 and goes up 1kg. With Manoel Nunes on SERPICO and Alan Munro on BRILLIANT DEAL there should not be much between them at the finish and it could well be worth watching. TONGARIRO was well beaten by SERPICO last outing but does meet him 3.5kg better and he could make his presence felt. Cliff Brown has a interesting debut runner FLIGHT OFTHE SAKER, by AMERICAIN's sire Dynaformer he won over 2400m in Ireland and his last run was an unplaced effort over 3200m, he may well find this too short."

RACE 5: MEXICAN ROSE 2010 STAKES CLASS 4 - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "A Class 4 over 1100m on the polytrack with a number of horses with question marks over them. CASH ADVANCE has drawn badly but is very smart on his day. He is resuming but has had several trials; if John Powell can get him across from his wide gate, he will be hard to run down given the form behind ITALIAN JOB should hold up here. FAITHFULLY was slowly away last outing and has had several jump-outs since; if Oscar Chavez can get him away from his good gate and have him traveling comfortably on the speed, he too could be hard to hold out. SCRAPPER WELL lived us to his good trial form with a solid run in a strong Class 4 over 1100m last start; if he has come on from that he should be right in the finish. BLACK SNOW also put in a good effort on Singapore debut, he can be expected to have improved from that effort and Dan Beasley should give him every chance. RAPPOR cannot draw an alley for love nor money; once again he has drawn out but is racing very consistently and should be on the speed for a long way. Amongst the usual suspects DON INAKI, XIN TREASURE and BENJI'S RULE can be expected to run well."

RACE 6: ROCKET MAN 2009 STAKES KRANJI STAKES C (SET WEIGHTS) - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$80000

Larry says, "A well named race and while none of these are in the great Rocket Man's league, there is plenty of class in this field and they will go quick. Not much separates the three last start Class 4 winners in the field - MAKAWAO, TIGER BEE and SHIN GOON. Of the trio, MAKAWAO won very strongly last start when blinkers went on. John Powell looked to have a bit in hand on that occasion and he should more than handle KSC company. TIGER BEE is the obvious pick and probably starts favourite given he is looking at a quartet of wins. It's hard to fault his efforts when winning his last two in Class 4 and is definitely a horse to follow through the grades. SHIN GOONG also won well enough last start to follow and given that was his first-up run, he improves with the market a good guide. But EXCEL N STRIKE looks the goods in this company. The top-weight is resuming after a couple of good runs and showed at a recent trial he can win first-up. The field has depth and SOUTHERN BOSS is in this a long way, CODIGO will be the closer and TIM improves with blinkers on first-time."

RACE 7: KRANJI SPRINT (SG3) (3+YO) (HCP) (2ND LEG OF SINGAPORE SPRINT SERIES) (RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) - 1200M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$200000

Larry says, "Even at the handicap conditions of the Kranji Sprint - the second leg of the Singapore Sprint Series - it is hard to leave out the likes of CAPTAIN OBVIOUS and MR BIG. CAPTAN OBVIOUS resumed after a long break with a very good run but given that was at WFA conditions and he gives the winner of that race - EL PADRINO - some 8kg for a five-length defeat, he looks no hope. Likewise, MR BIG gives away too much weight to EL PADRINO for a good old-fashioned spanking in the Merlion Trophy. So EL PADRINO looks hard to beat on paper being asked to carry just 51kg. Regular hoop, Oscar Chavez, goes back on-board after Davey Flores got the chocolates last start (Flores goes on Captain Obvious) and all things being equal, he should win (or at least beat those he met last start!). Which brings us to ZAC SPIRIT, EMPEROR MAX and JOHNNY GUITAR on 51kg, 50.5kg and 50kg respectively who all come into this race with exceptional form. You could make a serious case for all at the race conditions but ZAC SPIRIT looks a horse with plenty of upside and happy to think he plays a big part in this finish."

RACE 8: LIM’S FIGHTER 2008 STAKES CLASS 5 - 1900M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "This race could get ugly with a few maiden runners looking to have every chance (again!) and a few old battlers who also look ready to win. One of the veterans is a 9YO with some 80 starts under his belt - INCREDIBLE HULK - who does look ready to win again back in Class 5. Some of his recent efforts in Class 4 have been good and his last start in KSD company certainly good enough to win this with support likely and a handy 3kg claim. Two maidens that look due to break their respective ducks are BLAZING SPUR and EXCUSEZ MOI. BLAZING SPUR has had a few recent placings and given he has only had nine career starts, he will win races like this. EXCUSEZ MOI has had 16 starts - which is a concern - but certainly ready to win with luck in running. The only last start winner in the race - URBAN LEGEND - steps up from 1200m but as the two-time-winner has form over this trip, he must be a serious show with one eye on the tote."

RACE 9: ALWAYS FAST 2007 STAKES CLASS 4 - 1200M COURSE B (SC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 22:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "The usual solid Class 4 to close what should have been a very good Friday night's racing. The tote will give us a good guide with the likes of CAPTAIN KIRK, MARSEILLE ROULETTE and GEARIGURU all improving for the last start efforts. CAPTAIN KIRK went ordinary first-up but was over-weight so look for improvement with a few kg’s shed for the effort. MARSEILLE ROULETTE came with big wraps from Australia and certainly showed enough first-up to follow with GEARIGURU also ready to show his best after two solid Singapore runs. But MY BOY JACK is in good form and should win sooner than later in Class 4. R Hasri retains the mount and from gate two, he should have no excuses and a big run in expected. SAVODAN first-up after a spell would also win a race like this on his day and another who the tote will give us a good indication. CONVICT could win on form but looks a risk from a wide gate with a novice rider."
