The 2014 Cape Mare and Weanling Sale is set to take place at Kleinplasie, Worcester, on July 24th.

The sale will get under way at 10 am, and will be held on the day after the Cape Breeders’ annual Stallion auction. This year’s catalogue is 219 horse strong, and includes some truly exceptional prospects.

The Cape Mare and Weanling sale has a long history of uncovering many outstanding future broodmares. Remarkably, among others, the dams of two of South Africa’s greatest champions, were offered for sale at past Mare sales.

Stormsvlei, dam of Triple Horse Of the Year Pocket Power, was a R12 000 buy at the 2003 Mare and Weanling Sale, whilst La Massine, dam of dual Horse of the Year and current international sensation Variety Club, was a R25 000 purchase at the very same sale.

These are just two of the many outstanding broodmares sold off the Cape Mare and Weanling Sale, and no doubt more top-class mares will be found at the 2014 event.

This year’s catalogue includes 151 broodmares, as well as more than 30 fillies for stud.

Among the broodmares offered at this year’s Cape Mare and Weanling Sale are the likes of stakes performers Andrea Dora, Burmese (in foal to Jay Peg), Corn Dodger (in foal to Elusive Fort), Crescent Lily (in foal to Seul Amour), Favourite Island (in foal to Jay Peg), Garden Route (in foal to Rebel King), Guest Among Men (in foal to Oratorio), Prototype (in foal to Judpot), Rubirosa (in foal to Twice Over), Saucy Savannah (in foal to Bold Silvano), Sawubona (in foal to King’s Apostle), Sharp Mistress (in foal to Var), Spring Clover (in foal to Bold Silvano), Strelitzia (in foal to Bold Silvano), Tempter (in foal to Great Britain), and Xilomante (in foal to Dan De Lago).

Another exciting mare on sale is the beautifully bred Strategic Quest (by Rainbow Quest out of Danlu). Consigned as lot 22, Strategic Quest, who is in foal to the outstanding racehorse Twice Over, is the dam of impressive recent winner Arniston.

The excellent producer Derry Wood is another classy mare on sale. Catalogued as lot 88, the daughter of Fort Wood has already produced two top performers in Alderry (Gr2 Charity Mile) and Royal Vintage (Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes).

The classy, stakes winning Captain Al filly, Only Emily (Lot 169), is offered as a filly stud (Lot 169) by Snaith Racing Stables, while Sport City Trust offers the stakes placed pair Dark Journey (lot 159) and Madame Rooney (Lot 181).

The sale will also offer a number of well related 2yos – including a Rebel King half-brother to current 3yo sensation Trip Tease. The catalogue also includes yearlings by Black Minnaloushe and Lateral, as well as weanlings by Ashaawes, Black Minnaloushe, Captain Al, Count Dubois, Gitano Hernando, Greys Inn, Pathfork, Seventh Rock and Trippi, to name a few.
