New Turf Carriers announced yesterday morning that one of their trucks on the way to Cape Town had been involved in an accident that claimed the life of a groom and three horses from the Snaith Stables.
The nature of the accident or identity of the horses is unknown but the other horses on the float were safely transported from the scene.
Snaith Stables said in a statement, "Thanks for all your wishes and amazing support.
The three horses who didn't make it home were very dear to us and had the kindest temperaments - we were privileged to care for such amazing horses. They will be sadly missed by everyone in our yard.
We feel deeply for a family who lost their loved one - Elias who worked for New Turf Carriers was a champion.
We are grateful for the horses who survived the accident who are currently on route home, unharmed.
Thanks to New Turf Carriers for the way in which they handled everything and the extra care they give our horses."
