AMBLEWAY NEWSLETTER END JUNE 2014

KZN FEATURES IN THE WINTER SEASON

The racing in KZN has certainly been exciting with the July Handicap build up and the sprints and juvenile racing reaching their peaks during the month.

The build up to the July has been very controversial as the field has changed several times and the weights allocated, particularly to the three year olds, has caused mixed feelings.

BEACH BEAUTY , who won in Cape town several times at a Grade 1 level, ran a cracking race in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge and beat Yorker and Capetown Noir home, but after making up for her draw did not have the beating of King Of Pain. He was given a clever ride and being outsider in the race was not given much chance to beat the 3 favourites home! As a result of this race and after much debate she is out of the July and Yorker is in quarantine!
In the same race we were very distressed to hear of JET EXPLORER falling and needing an operation to his jaw.....he looked so well in the ring and his training preparation was going well for the July!

ALONG CAME POLLY ran a gutsy race in the Woolavington Stakes over 2000 meters , also a Grade 1 race by finishing 4th. She has now been sold by Buffalo Bill and will take up stud duties at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. She has only won two Grade 1’ s however has certainly proved a very good buy for him!

The winners of the sprints have certainly changed with different horses winning the sprint races. The one filly that has been consistently improving is VARIKATE. She ran 4th in the S A Fillies Sprint to Via Africa(who is also being exported) then won the Grade 2 Post Merchants handicap over the distance of 1200 meters at Greyville! She races for her owner-breeder Jim Mahony and has certainly improved the chances of trainer Justin Snaith winning the South African Championship.

The juveniles have started to make their mark as well and we were thrilled to see BECKEDORF run a cracking 4th to his stable mate Guineas in the Gold Medallion Grade 1. He has once again showed his sprinting abilities to the Drier yard! (Dennis has won this race 3 times in a row! Quite a feat.....)

Other juveniles including, EASY LOVER, are starting to show their ability as they mature over more ground. He ran on from behind under Kevin Shea for 2nd in the Gatecrasher Stakes (Listed) over 1450 meters. He made his owner Ian Van Schalkwyk and trainer Duncan Howells very happy as he also won later in the day with his own- bred One Cool Dude!

Duncan must have been pleased with the win by MISS ARGENTINA over a sprint, and so he ran her in the Allan Robertson. She, and the favourite, BALKAN, who also won her last race in great style, did not run as well in this race. The latter has won 2 races in a row for the Drier yard, and appears better than that run.

Other juveniles to be placed include SAME JURISDICTION (in her debut), ELTONS APOSTLE,CANADIAN CLUB and NATIONAL APPROVAL.

Horses who have won smaller features that are not black type include AIR PATROL and CRESCENDO. Both of these horses have won the KZN Winter Challenge over 2000 and 1200 meters respectively for their connections! AIR PATROL set the pace and won a great race for Garth Puller who also had TARGET FIVE, who ran second! Both of these horses were by the ill fated sire Jet Master and purchased by Garth from their breeder-owners Pat and Henry Devine. CRESCENDO is trained for Messrs Blank, Nestadt and Findlay, by the Drier yard. He is a son of Act One (Dancers Daughter fame) and he certainly is becoming a useful sprinter having showed guts in last race to win that and then to follow up again in this race!

Sometimes in racing there is a lot of hard work that goes on behind scenes...this certainly is true of IMPERIAL WISH who had such a temperament problem that she nearly did not make the rack. Luckily much work later she won her debut start over a trip that may be too short for her! She won over a sprint distance of 1000meters and her owner Knut Haug and the Drier team were surprised and delighted that all their efforts paid off! One can only hope that this daughter of Silvano goes onto do more on the track as she certainly can run!

We have had a few winners in the Gauteng area; St John Gray won with a son of Sarge - NORGAY, and POLE DANCE and SAN VINCENSO showed their liking to the Kimberley track by winning again for their connections. In PE the well named horse, SO YOU THINK won for his connections there!

At Ambleway we were thrilled to get 5 horses from the Cape- one is a son of Silvano that was a sales topper at The Cape Premier Book 1 Sale and he is a full brother to the current good horse Punta Arenas. Another is by a German stallion Sabiango, and others are by Mambo In Seattle, Count Du Bois and Toreodor.

We also received 3 yearlings to spell from Australia-specifically from the Melbourne Sale two by High Chaperal and one by New Approach. We have seen both of these stallions in the UK and it really is exciting to get these babies here. Their pedigrees are amazing and the 2 by High Chaperal fillies are very different. One is strong and muscular and the other is taller and more immature. The New Approach filly is out of a Danehill mare so could be anything.

We have a Rebel King colt from the Klawervlei Sale which is more immature than some of the babies but he has good bone.

There is a long list of horses that have been placed and should win soon—
MIKES CHOICE,TYCOON TOUCH,ORANGE BLOSSOM,INFORMATION HIWAY,WILD LORD,ULTIMATE TIGER,TINSELTOWN,TIGER QUEST,TARAS DAWN,UMOYANA,D’VASH,ROMAN LEGION,HOWAMI and MORPHEUS

That is all for now. Until the end of the season.......

Enjoy your racing
