DYNASTY FILLY TOPS DAY TWO OF 2014 2YO SALE

Prices were mixed on Thursday, the second day of the 2014 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale. While the sales topper was a R1.4 million buy (up from the R1 million paid for the 2013 day 2 sale topper), both the aggregate and average fell heavily from a year ago. The sales aggregate dropped by 11%, falling from R26.735 million to R23.635 million. Average price of the sale dropped by 17%, and fell from R99 019 in 2013 to R81 782 in 2014. While the number of horses not sold grew to 37 from 30 last year, vendor buy backs dropped from 30 to 26 in 2014. The sales median price dropped by 8 percent, dropping from R60 000 last year to R55 000. However, there remained money for the attractive lots, and three lots fetched upwards of R500 000 on the second day of the Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale. The sales topper came towards the end of the second day, in the form of 354. Consigned by Cheveley Stud (breeders of the recently crowned Horse Of The Year Legislate), the unnamed bay filly, who long looked a standout on pedigree, was snapped up by Varsfontein Stud for R1.4 million. The sales topper is a daughter of leading sire Dynasty, whose offspring include the recently crowned Equus Champions Legislate and Beach Beauty, to name just two. Dynasty's progeny were in high demand at the sale, with the Highlands based stallion responsible for the top two lots on offer. Out of the Royal Academy mare Mystic Spring, the sales topping filly is a half-sister to the ill-fated Rabiya, South Africa's Equus Champion 3YO Classic Male of 2005, and four other stakes winners. CEO Jan Naude was resigned after day two of the sale had concluded, saying "The R1.4 million sales topped provided some excitement on the second day of the sale, and the sales turnover should up on last year's total by the end of tomorrow. There remains good money for good horses, but clearly it is very much a buyers market." The sale continues, and ends, tomorrow, when it will recommence at 10:30 am.
