PREVIEW SINGAPORE Sunday 31 August 2014

An interesting days racing from Singapore with 10 local races coupled with a cameo (race 8) from Korea.

Obviously all eyes will be on the three Singapore horses invited for the “Asia Challenge Cup” with TRUDEAU, EL PADRINO and SPEEDY CAT flying the republics flag.

The Kranji trio will take on eight locals and three Japanese raiders over 1400m and the race is sure to attract plenty of attention both in Singapore and abroad.

No idea who wins but before cheering on the locals, we might find a winner in race 7 in Singapore with CHEETAH ON FIRE looking very well placed in an OB74 over 1700m.

The 6YO comes into this with three second placings to his name so is definitely due and gets in well here with a very handy Zuriman 2kg claim.

It is an open race so he will need to be at his best but from gate 3, he should get every chance to knock in a well-deserved win.

But perhaps the best race on the card is the lucky last which sees some promising 4YO’s that include RUAPEHU, STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT and SURE WIN.

The trio look very progressive types but while they will play a big part in feature races in the future, they will need to show their best up against the likes of THESE STREETS, APPRECIATION and the honest swooper, SOLITAIRE.

Best Bets; (CHEETAH ON FIRE race 7, win), (STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT race 11, each-way) and (ALASAMO race 10, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (1), race 9 (2, 3, 5 and 7), race 10 (1, 2, 3, 5 and 7), race 11 (1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9).

RACE 7: OPEN BENCHMARK 74 - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 16:00 PRIZE MONEY: S$80000

Larry says, "Most horses in this field have good form under their belt and we can expect a wide open betting race and most likely a very busy finish. Of those with winning form under their belts, BOOMERANG DELUXE looks one to follow. The 4YO dead-heated two starts back when looking the winner but showed he can dominate at the business end last time out and happy to follow on that win. DANNY is also in winning form and while Moreira replaces Rueven, the 7YO does go well for apprentices so don't expect a great deal of improvement with the magic man on-board. But at the top of the weights, CHEETAH ON FIRE is in good form and given he was supported and just missed last start in nice company, he could be hard to beat with a handy 2kg Zuriman claim. But to be honest, throw a dart over the blanket in the raffle."

In-form but oddly not the type who improves much under Moreira.

RACE 9: MAIDEN (1) - 1400M COURSE E (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 16:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A few horses bring good Poly form into this 1400m turf maiden and that could be an issue for punters. Especially when the two at the top of the weights - GOOD MISSION and TOP OF THE TOWN - have both been unplaced at turf runs (over 1400m) three starts back before two good Poly runs. But TOP OF THE TOWN seems the pick of the two given he wasn't beaten a long way on the turf and had excuses not to finish in the place mix. His two runs since have suggested he has improved regardless and looks the one to beat. LUCKY LION on the other hand is very consistent on the grass and more importantly for punters, gets Moreira. True, the Brazilian is not the messiah but he certainly isn't a naughty boy either so he should make a difference. Of the others with winning hopes, Oscar made a difference on PESCATORE last start so he is in the mix and SUPER SIX looks in form and gets young 'arry."

RACE 10: CLASS 5 - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 17:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A maiden in ALASAMO looks well-placed to knock in his first win at career start seven but the 4YO will need luck after drawing awkwardly in 10. In his favour - apart from finding himself in Class 5 for the first time - is blinkers/pacifiers go on and given a nice recent trial with head-gear, he could win this. In his way is a horse that looks out of form but was part of history back in September last year. The horse in question is WEOWNA FLYER who was part of "Moreira's Magic Eight" and given Joao has had two rides on the 5YO for a win and a second placing, he will improve under the Brazilian. It is wide open though and SILVER FLY cannot be ignored after breaking his maiden status at his last start and GODS SPEED is also in solid form and could show up with a tongue-tie added."

RACE 11: OPEN BENCHMARK 67 - 1200M COURSE E (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 17:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "The last race is a beauty with some very progressive types in a field that has more depth than most (if not all) races this weekend. Laurie Laxon plays a very big hand with RUAPEHU and STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT. Of the two, Corey Brown stays with STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT and that could be a good sign for the 4YO second up from a spell. He has shown plenty at eight career starts thus far and there looks plenty of good racing to come - hopefully starting today. But RUAPEHU won as the odds-on pop last start and will get plenty of support again with John Powell up. The 4YO hasn't won on the turf but that stat will change sooner than later and he could be hard to beat. You can throw a blanket over plenty of others with THESE STREETS involved a long way and with such a fast pace expected early, watch SOLITAIRE late at odds."

Excuses not to win last start in similar affair and can be value.
