PREVIEW SINGAPORE FRIDAY 5 September 2014

Trial form is often over-looked when doing race form but given the amount of winners being thrown up on a Tuesday or Thursday morning, it will pay to start including those with a nice hit-out under their belt.

Obviously the trials are a good pointer when horses are resuming from a spell and SUPER KENNY has shown more than enough to be a winning show first-up.

The 5YO hasn’t raced since winning in Class 3 in February earlier this year but with a few strong trials under his belt, he should be ready to show his best in race 5 on the card - a KSC Poly sprint over 1100m.

The field is strong with the likes of ASTROSTAR, RAISE NO DOUBT and BAHEN all very capable on their day, but SUPER KENNY knows how to win fresh and can overcome an awkward gate with Nooresh Juglall on-board for the first-time.

Elsewhere on the card, I’M KOOL also resumes with a very nice trial under his belt and can win in maiden company over 1000m (race 1).

The 3YO showed more than enough two runs back before finding it all too tough in the Golden Horseshoe.

He gets blinkers added to his gear for this race and his recent trial with head-gear suggests he can win, although obviously STORMY ALONG is the one he has to beat.

Likewise,  another maiden in SMART IDEA (race 2) gets blinkers for the first time at the races so his strong trial form a good pointer to a very forward showing.

His stablemate, SMART SUPREME, also gets blinkers for the first-time after winning on debut and also showed enough at the trials to keep safe in race 3 although LIVELY DRAGON does look hard to beat after drawing the ace.

Other black-bookers from the trials include NATURAL NICE (race 8), FLASH GIFT (race 7), SUNNY (race 6) and DIAMOND ON THE BAY - whose form is hopeless - could improve in race 2 on the back of a fair mid-week hit-out.

Best Bets; (SUPER KENNY race 5, win), (SMART LAD race 2, each-way) and (TEQUILA SHOT race 6, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (1, 2, 5 and 6), race 7 (1, 2, 5, 6 and 7), race 8 (2, 3, 4, 6 and 7), race 9 (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9).

RACE 1: MAIDEN - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A Maiden over 1000m on the polytrack where the top three in the weights are far superior to the rest, I’M KOOL is resuming after finding the Golden Horseshoe too hot; at his previous start he was placed behind CASTOR, his recent blinker trial was excellent and with Harry Kassim looking for his 100th Kranji winner, he should be on the speed and hard to beat. STORMY ALONG has been trying for a while, he has placed seven times in 13 polytrack starts - the last two over this trip; with Noh Senari’s 3kg claim and the ace he will be the testing material. BARNBURGH LAD has been running well in stronger company, he placed 2nd over 1200m in KSD company last start and should be closing late. Of the others, CHINESE TYCOON having his 53rd start is a place chance; SALUTE put in a personal best last start - albeit in a very weak affair, DIAMOND ON THE BAY trialed well and the unreliable TEOCHEW BARRISTER could show up."

RACE 2: RESTRICTED MAIDEN (2+3YO) (WFA) - 1400M COURSE A (SC) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "A competitive 1400m Restricted Maiden on turf with multiple chances. The blinkers go on SMART LAD, he has raced well at all three starts the most recent in the Juvenile Championship; freshened by a recent trial win he should be right in the finish. INTENSE GOLD has been knocking on the door and gets back on turf and a distance over which he placed three starts back; he has to give them all weight but the claim for Noh Senari will help. Most of the rest of the field are young improving horses who will appreciate getting over 1400m. BRAVO CHARLIE had support on debut and put in good effort when 2nd to WOW, he has trialled nicely since and should race well from inside alley. The winkers go on SUVARNABHUMI; he was checked and despite greenness ran on strongly last start – he should make his presence felt. MIGHTY GLORY has been close up at all four outings the most recent at this trip; the draw is no help but he is honest and will be around the mark once again. Others with chances include likely improvers SATELLITE PRINCE, AGELESS and the oddly named, DR N WING FIGHTERS."

RACE 3: CLASS 4 - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "A Class 4 for the speedsters over 1000m on the poly. LIVELY DRAGON is suited this grade, surface and distance; perfectly drawn from the ace he will give a bold sight and be the one to run down. The blinkers go on SMART SUPREME who sat on the speed and toughed out KSD win on debut over 1000m; he has trialled well since, gets a claim for Firdaus and despite the draw should go forward and give a bold sight. If the leaders get tired, MIGHTY CREATION who has won three times at 1000m and is suited in Class 4, will be the one closing late. TIM has not won for a while but he has speed and Corey Brown may be able to get the best out of him. The field falls away after these though the veteran IMACRUISER who has changed stables and can never be discounted and the maiden MULTITASKING has been trialling well and placed twice on the synthetic in Ireland before going to Malaysia. If the other maiden, the emergency JUST A TIP, gets a start he could run a cheeky race."

RACE 4: CLASS 5 - 2000M COURSE A (SC) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A full field of Class 5 horses compete over 2000m on turf and some of these are a bit better than the average Class 5. The Takaoka-trained GALAXY EXPRESS led and hung on well to get 3rd over 1800m on poly last outing; his only win was at 1600m on turf and with Harry Kassim steering, he looks to have some staying potential and should give a bold sight. OVER EASY was placed two starts back over 2200m behind WAR TIME then ran 3rd on the poly over 1800m in Class 5; he is poorly drawn but is suited at Class, surface and trip. PINYIN ran on strongly to place on turf over 1400m last outing in KSD and just missed at 1800m on poly at start prior, his best form has been on the poly but he battles away and the claim for Zuriman will help. BRAVO has plenty of weight and a poor alley but has won at 1800m and was placed last outing over that trip in KSD company; he is far from reliable but drops in grade and is suited here. Old INCREDIBLE HULK has won twice on turf and only knows how to stay, he has not won for 21 starts but will run the 2000m out better than most. There are plenty of others that could show up including the mares ANGE D’ORIENT, SEA OF LOVE and MARINE PARK, who are one-paced but will run out the journey."

RACE 5: KRANJI STAKES C (SET WEIGHTS) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$80000

Larry says, "A full-field of high-class KSC sprinters compete over 1100m on the poly. SUPER KENNY is a top quality sprinter resuming. The Pat Shaw-trained gelding has been trialling well and has a good first-up record; with Nooresh Juglall to ride he should make a bid. ASTROSTAR is a very smart polytracker who has never missed a place on the surface in eight starts, he will appreciate the claim for Troy See and from the good gate race well again. MAI GURU is a handy sprinter with plenty of speed resuming, he has been trialling well and if supported could run a cheeky race fresh. BAHEN resumed in the Group 3 Woodlands Handicap over 1200m and while well beaten, he goes well when fresh and is much better suited in this with the claim for Zuriman. The blinkers come off RAISE NO DOUBT and the tongue tie goes on, he was not far away in the Woodlands, this is easier but he has plenty of weight and the draw is no help in a hot field. Amongst the many other chances, HARD STUFF, TOUCH OF GOLD, BAZINGA and WARSPIRIT could all get in the mix."

RACE 6: OPEN BENCHMARK 67 - 2000M COURSE A (SC) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "As we saw last start when NEW YORK CITY was given no chance due to a muddling early pace, tactics and how the race is run certainly plays a big part in these staying races. And while being beaten as the odds-on elect on that occasion, NEW YORK CITY with Dan Beasley staying on-board can make amends in this even field. There will be some improvers and none more so than TEQUILA SHOT for Pat Shaw. The former South African had excuses for what looked just a fair debut bit given he was always going to be better over longer, the quick step up from 1400m has him under notice. MY DANCING DUEL also improves with Corey Brown replacing Joseph See a pointer to his winning chances. FLYING AHEAD won too well last start not to be in the winning mix with support likely and it will pay to keep the rest safe in this open race with even SUNNY on the improve at odds after backing up his only good run with a solid trial."

RACE 7: OPEN BENCHMARK 89 - 1400M COURSE A (SC) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$100000

Larry says, "It's fair to say the Pat Shaw team is in-form and with some very capable ex-South African and Argentineans hitting the ground running in Singapore, he is a trainer to follow. This field has one of each - ALEXANDRA PALACE (South Africa) and MAGNETO (Argentina) - and both look winning hopes in this and both also worth following into the Gold Cup in November. Of the two, ALEXANDRA PALACE won too well at his Singapore debut and with a couple of trials to freshen him up for this, he can win again with the Juglall booking a pointer. But MAGNETO looked stiff not to beat his stable-mate last Sunday and Pat Shaw had no hesitation throwing him straight back in and he could easily win if he has trained on. The field has depth though and FLASH GIFT went well enough over this trip last start and trailed nicely so worth a long look with STRUBELI and THUMPING both horses on the way up who know how to win."

RACE 8: KRANJI STAKES D (CLAIMING RIDERS ONLY) (SET WEIGHTS) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$38000

Larry says, "NATURAL NINE has yet to win in Singapore but given what the former Kiwi has shown at five starts at Kranji, he goes close in this. He has drawn wide in 11 but a positive ride from MM Firdaus should see him have every chance on what looks his preferred surface. The rest do look unreliable to say the least but HIDDEN VENTURE looked stiff not to win last start (where he protested unsuccessfully against the winner) and obviously on that run he is a genuine winning show. ZAC HEAVEN probably leads from gate 9 (which could assist NATURAL NINE) and if he gets a soft lead, he could be hard to pass late. Throw in FAT BOBO and FARRAND in what looks a wide open race."

Can lead and can win.
5 97489 Yourstokeep     App R Rueven-2 S Chua 2 53 58.0 20
Form reads badly but gets blinkers and should appreciate this company.

Can be hard to follow but excuses not to win lats start and another to keep safe.
7 14002 Hidden Venture     App S Noh-3 S Yeoh 6 52 58.0 3.00
Should have won last start and looks every chance to make amends.

RACE 9: CLASS 4 - 1400M COURSE A (SC) TIME: 22:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000

Larry says, "As per the modus operandi of the Singapore Turf Club, the last race is a wide open Class 4 and looks a beauty on paper. But while there will be plenty of value and it will pay to go very wide in exotics, SPUN GOLD looks a very progressive type and can win again. The Hard Spun 4YO is honest - winning twice and placing twice from just six career starts - and given his last three starts have all been terrific over this trip, he could be hard to beat. But DEAUVILLE gets to jump from a good gate and given what he showed late last start, that could make the difference. In fact, given you would think Danny Beasley has him sitting just off what should be a solid clip up front, he could be the testing material when it counts. Obviously HUGHSY with two wins from as many runs to his name picks himself but plenty of others that can win with value in mind for the likes of IMPERIAL FIGHTER, LEAVE ME ALONE, DAAD'S THE WAY and BORSALINO."

2 42*12 Spun Gold     Cw Brown C Brown 4 61 57.0 4.00
In super form and looks the benchmark again.
3 21159 Serpico     App S Noh-3 M Freedman 11 60 56.5 20
Resuming and would give this a shout if at his best. Watch market.
4 11 Hughsy     D Flores D Hill 10 59 56.0 3.00
Two-from-two and looks well-placed to keep the streak alive.
5 56432 Daad's The Way     L Allpress Rb Marsh 2 58 55.5 16
Veteran whose only turf win was this trip so pay to follow each-way at odds.
6 367 Grand Seven Seas     M Ewe-1 D Koh 9 58 55.5 20
Did it tough on the Poly last start and pay to consider on two good turf runs prior.
7 65213 Deauville     D Beasley L Laxon 3 57 55.0 6.00
Stormed home to place last start and looks a leading hope if handier from nice gate.
8 11084 Leave Me Alone     Th Koh-2 M Yusof 1 56 54.5 20
Returned to form last start and most recent win this trip so could show up without surprising.
9 12135 Imperial Fighter     App K A'isisuhairi-1 C Brown 5 55 54.0 10
In very solid form, can lead and might prove hard to pass.
10 4 Maple Memory     I Santana L Dragon 8 55 54.0 12
Had support and went OK at Singapore debut with improvement expected over 1400m.
11 210*8 Precious Gem     T O'shea S Gray 6 55 54.0 33
Not a mile away last start and should be more competitive this company.
12 21206 Adrenaline     App Z Zuriman-2 Rb Marsh 12 54 53.5 33
Should also be more competitive this company and looks for improvement.
