AMBLEWAY NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2014

As we said in our last newsletter in September, we are going to focus on the Ready To Run Sale. We took up 7 horses for Nutfield Stud and 4 for Lita Futeran on the Supplementary Sale. Everyone was happy and we sold most of the horses for really good prices. Our Top prices were for a Western Winter colt, Eternal Ice that was sold for R750,000 and a Western Winter filly, Frosted Honey that was sold for R700.000. We sold the Supplementay Catologue for more than expected, as they had all been purchased at the KZN sale for a lot less!

A big thank you must go to all of the people that showed interest in the horses and helped them sell for what they did.....

There are 3 Ready To Run sales in just a month, with the race incentives to follow, and it appears that this trend is interesting plenty of buyers! The horses have all had time to develop and in addition one can see them move (which you cannot always judge in other sales). The concept is good as the median price reflects- these sales produce the 3rd highest prices after the Cape Premier Sale and the National Yearling Sale is April.

The Median price of R150,000 has gone up over last year(in 2013 the median price was R100,000) and it will be interesting to see if the median price of the Ready To Run Sale held by the CTS (R90,000)goes up next year and the number of entries on the original TBA sale increases. The latter Sale normally is well supported but this year the Summerhill Stud draft was sold by the CTS Sale group. All the Sales produced millionaires, mostly from stallions that stand abroad ,and the top local stallions appeared to be Var, Captain Al and Warm White Night.

There appeared to be a strong middle, and upper market but the lower market was slower! The TBA must have been pleased with their overall results as it showed that there remains plenty of support for the country’s oldest thoroughbred sale house as both their median and average increased from 2013. The average price was R242,000 from R 186,000 and the median price was R155,000 compared to last year’s R120,000!

The race day amongst the sales days was very exciting to attend, largely because we had a runner in the Ready To Run Cup and there was some really good horses to see race on the day! We had SARATOGA DANCER in the Ready To Run Cup Race and he ran a really good race for all of his owners the Trotters, Nidds, Westwaters, and the owner-trainer Duncan Howells. He finished 6th on the heels of the winner Rich Girl and when he actually passed us with 30 metres to run he was 3rd! It just showed us what a long straight they have at Turfontein! In the race we also had CAPTAINS ORDERS which finished behind him!

We also saw Majmu and Harrys Son both win and the former must rate now a top filly for Mike de Kock. The latter colt franked his two year old form by winning a gutsy race for his connections! The top sprinter VIVA LA VAR was scratched as he bumped his head on the starting stalls......otherwise it made for a great days racing!

The Season in Gauteng is hotting up and we had a runner TIGER QUEST run a great 2nd in the Aquadrome Banyana Handicap (Listed). She gave the winner plenty of weight over the 1000meter trip and was only caught on the line.

In KZN we did well when EASY LOVER made mince meat of his opposition to win the Guineas Trial (listed) over a mile. He won his third race from six outings for his connections Ian Van Schalkwyk and Gerrard Scholtz and trainer Duncan Howells by an easy 2 1\4 lenghts! He was bred at the Arc En Ciel Stud by Craig Carey being by Right Approach out of Miss Gold Digger and was sold at the CTS last year in March for R120,000.

The Sizzling Summer season is on its way in the Cape and we are delighted that our horses there are making their presence felt......
JET EXPLORER ran a great 4th after recovering from surgery after he broke his jaw when he came down badly last year, the speedy VARIKATE ran 2nd for her connections and VOGUE AWARD and TRIPTIQUE ran well in their debuts for their connections. The latter was just beaten for 2nd place and the former ran a great 3rd!

GENERALISSIMO made his appearance and a welcome to Cape Town win for the Drier yard and owner Nic Jonson! He won his debut there by showing his opposition a clean pair of heels from the start! He was well ridden by Sean Cormack and he has now won a hat trick of races for the connections and was only just caught on the line in his debut ......watch him there in the Cape Season!

We have had winners all around the country side.....

In KZN we have been delighted with the wins of MICKEY GOSSIPER who beat home the favourite TRIPLE APOLOGY in a sprint at Greyville. He was bred by Bruce Campbell and this son of, Var, he races with Jaap Van Der Vendel and Freddie Knights for the Drier team. Mike De Kock trains TRIPLE APOLOGY for the Joostes and he should break his maiden soon.

Another son of Var, VIVA LA VAR, won his debut for colourful racegoer and owner Alesh Naidoo. He had to dig deep in to his pockets for this colt at a recent sale, as was unbeaten in his 3 previous under Dennis Drier, and this time he won for trainer Charles Laird! Congrats to you all for getting him once again to the winners box!

Other winners in KZN have been CANDENAUT, INDIAN CONNECTION and SUMMER SIXTY NINE which have all got amazing stories of their own!
CANDENAUT came here as she had undergone an arthroscopy and she spent time here recuperating from her surgery. She had shown Duncan Howells ,her conditioner, plenty before on the track and she vindicated this by winning and breaking her maiden after many good placed runs!
The older gelding INDIAN CONNECTION got up to defy his 7 years of age by winning on the polytrack for his connections and trainer Michael Roberts . He had placed behind him both SARATOGA DANCER and CHILL who had both vied for favouritism. SARATOGA DANCER had a hard race and was only caught in the dying phases of the race. This was his last run before making the trip up to Turfontein in the Ready to Run Race.SUMMER SIXTY NINE was a winner of her maiden after knocking on the door some time for the Anthonys. She had been bred at Scott Brothers and was purchased by them at the Shongweni Sale last year in February. Well done to all!

In Gauteng we had some luck with 2 horses that had joined the Dom Zaki yard-MORHEUS and O BRIEN. These two horses won for Knut Haug and are both by the champion sire Silvano. The latter was the top priced two year old horse at the Germiston Two Year Old Sale in 2013 and the former horse was one of my favourites at the farm when he was here.
St John Gray won with the horses TELL MY STAR a useful sprinter, and two of his own breds-EGYPTIAN and the useful stayer YER MAAN over ground.

In PE we were chuffed to see SO YOU THINK win again for his connections and HOWAMI break her maiden after being so consistant. Well done to Lee Scribante, Eric Stephenson and Alan Greef their conditioner

There is a long list of horses from Ambleway that have been placed in there last run and deserve following including......

OFF RAMP,NORGAY,KINGS ARCHER,NIGHT EDITOR,ULTIMATE TIGER,THE KINGS HAND,ACROSS THE LAKE,CANADIAN CLUB,CHILL,ESS EL KAY,QUICK DELIVERY,SEVENTH JOY,CHESTNUT CHARGER,ICE GODDESS,WIND AT YOUR BACK,CAPTAIN ROMANOV,IMPERIAL FABERGE,BREATHLESS,HAWAIIN SUN,INSPECTOR CASEY,NIGHTS ON BROADWAY,NATIONAL APPROVAL,UMOYANA,TAKE OFF and some I have already mentioned JET EXPLORER,VOGUE WOOD,TRIPTIQUE and

We are delighted to report we have been very lucky with the mares we have as they have all foaled down at Clifton Stud. FINE FEATHER has had a lovely filly by Oratorio, AIRBRUSH had a scopy colt by Kahal and the mare WESTERN INTRIGUE has a well boned big colt by Kings Apostle. They will all come to Ambleway once they are safely in foal.....thank you for all your hard work Peter,Jenny and Chistine at Clifton Stud.

Enjoy your racing ........Jane Trotter
