Judicial (SAF) had hinted that he had a feature race victory in him last term and Tyrone Zackey's (pictured) charge, having his first run of the current season, delivered on that promise as he ran on well to land the Gr 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m at Turffontein on Saturday. Earl Of Derby shaped encouragingly in second and finished well clear of Everest (SAF) and Glorious Jet (SAF) who brought up the minor placings.
Everest made his way across from a wide draw to lead from The Hangman and Jet Jamboree, with Rushmore River, Santa Carolina and Heart Of A Lion next best. Mountain Master, Knock On Wood, Killua Castle and Judicial raced in midfield, ahead of Glorious Jet and Tiger's Quest while Earl Of Derby sat at the rear with Yer-Maan.
Everest stuck to his guns in the straight and saw off the initial challenges of Rushmore River and Killua Castle as a numbers of runners started to backpedal. The exceptions were Judicial, who had travelled ominously well turning into the straight and swept into the lead entering the last furlong, and Earl Of Derby, who had a mountain to climb at the top of the straight but started to close in hand over fist. The latter really took off in the closing stages but Judicial had stolen a march and continued to gallop strongly all the way to the line, winning by just under a length and completing a hat-trick in the process.
Judicial went off at 16/1 but that looked rather long odds for a progressive-looking sort who had been coming along nicely since being gelded last season. Both he and Earl Of Derby, who finished really well, have thrown themselves into the mix for the Sansui Summer Cup.
There was a big gap back to the rest of the field, who finished strung out, but Everest can be commended for a brave front-running effort in this class while Glorious Jet showed that he still retains his enthusiasm and is capable of adding to his earnings in this sort of company.
