The match race between SEVENTH PLAIN and BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE developed into just that in the first feature race on J & B Met Day at Kenilworth in Cape Town. Backed to win when they made their debuts last time, BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE did his chances no favours that day when he he stumbled at the start and failed to make up the ground over 800m.
This time there were no problems at the start for BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE. There was nothing to choose between the two early on. The two horses not only vied for favouritism but with 400m to go they both vied for the victory. SEVENTH PLAIN, on grounds of his good victory last time, was sent off as favourite. There were only two horses in it at the 400m mark and with the 3kg advantage, the Australian bred. BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE, was always going to win. Well ridden by Richard Fourie, he eventually drew away by a length and a quarter. SEVENTH PLAIN was gallant in defeat and both these horses will no doubt fight it out in future campaigns. One would like to think that both will go on to win their fair share of feature races.
ERNIE made up ground late and finished well and looks to have scope. PRINCESS ROYAL who opened up as favourite but drifted finished next, just over four lengths behind BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE.
