COLTRANE shows courage to win the GRADE 3 CHAIRMAN'S CUP

The five year old son of Giant's Causeway defied the top weight when he won the marathon 3200m event at Kenilworth on Saturday in the last of the three feature races on the day. He had to  concede 7½ kg to the horse in second, GONE BABY GONE. The run of the race, which was slow for about 2600m, meant that the 60kg he had to carry was not a factor as he never had to really put himself under pressure to keep in touch with the horses in front and around him.

The pace was slow right from the outset. COLTRANE was one of the first to get going from LORENZO MARQUES. Jockey, Bernard Fayd'Herbe, allowed him to settle and this allowed PUTNEY FLYER and COUNT MY LUCK to run behind LORENZO MARQUES. The ran in single file right up until the top of the home straight with little change to the order throughout.     SHINGWEDZI had moved up a few places. COLTRANE was allowed to sit back and relax.

The field became more compact as they readied themselves for the run home. The run-in developed into a sprint which played into COLTRANE'S hands as he fought it out with GONE BABY GONE who kept up the pressure until the final 100m when the class and courage of COLTRANE eventually told, despite the 7½ kg extra he had to carry. SHINGWEDZI was not disgraced in third and can take some credit from this run. PUTNEY FLYER played his part in the race.
