GRADE 2 HAWAII STAKES: Great finish to decide winner
Jockey Francois Herholdt rode a clever race to keep CHEKILLI together in the latter stages of the Grade 2 race at Turffontein this afternoon. The start was an excellent one. CHEKILLI went to the front with HALVE THE DEFICIT in second. SNOWDON found himself in third with the Cape Town raider, CHESTNUT'S ROCKET in fourth. The favourite, SABADELL, found himself midfield.
The pace was on throughout and order remained the same almost throughout. CHEKILLI was challenged by HALVE THE DEFICIT from the 200m mark right to the line. It was a clever ride by Francois Herholdt who knew exactly what was under him. HALVE THE DEFICIT gave his all and did everything late on, except win. While these two were fighting it out, another Cape Town raider was finishing powerfully down the centre of the track. Had the race been another 200m he may have mowed them down late.
CHEKILLI showed promise early in his career and was often touted as something special but lost her way along the way. He has now won six from thirteen starts and now two in a row. One feels that we could be hearing more from him before the end of the season.
