Grade 1 H F OPPENHEIMER HORSE CHESTNUT STAKES - CAPTAIN AMERICA proves his class
CAPTAIN AMERICA beat a top class field to win the Grade 1 Horse Chestnut Stakes. This race probably dispelled the idea that Cape Town trainers cannot win Grade 1 races in Gauteng. The son of CAPTAIN AL has been a little inconsistent of late but came back to his best in no uncertain terms this afternoon. This win would have made up for the switching of yards of his champion horse FUTURA a few weeks ago.
ASHTON PARK and LOUIS THE KING both missed the break.
NO WORRIES got going in the early stages but soon relinquished the lead to BOUCLETTE TOP, DELIVER THE POWER, NO WORRIES and HEAVY METAL. TELLINA found himself at the back of the field.
As the moved into the home straight BOUCLETTE TOP kept his lead and he raced where he likes to race best. NO WORRIES moved into second from DELIVER THE POWER from HEAVY METAL. CAPTAIN AMERICA was beginning to make a charge and was only half a length back.
CAPTAIN AMERICA moved into the lead with 400m to go and it was race over. TELLINA did his best work late while BOUCLETTE TOP stayed on for third. HALVE THE DEFICIT was in fourth. ASHTON PARK was not disgraced in sixth, just behind WHITELINE FEVER.
The big disappointment of the race was the champion, LOUIS THE KING. He appeared to lose interest after his sluggish start. He should not be ignored next time out as he is full of class and should be considered for the Grade 1 races still to come.
This was sire Captain Al's second winner on the card.
