While the aggregate of the 2015 National Sale dropped slightly from last year, there was an overall sense of satisfaction following the sales conclusion on Friday night. The three day sales average rose by nearly 8.5% -rising from R338 229 in 2014 to a healthy R367 065 this year. Also up was the sales median price, which rose to R240 000, an increase of 6.7% on last year's R225 000. While the aggregate dropped by 5.9% (from R134 615 000), last years catalogue (529 lots versus 449 in 2015) was substantially larger than in 2015, which reduces its relevance. The sale also saw a new record price set for a yearling sold on the National Sale, when a Fort Wood filly, consigned by Lammerskraal Stud, was sold for R4.75 million. Catalogued as lot 221, the filly, out of a half sister to former Lammerskraal based champion sire Western Winter, she was knocked down to Rattray Stud, who ended the sale as the third top buyer. Top price on the Friday came in the form of Craven, a colt consigned by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm. Catalogued as lot 407, the magnificent Dynasty colt was knocked down for R3.1 million to the bid of Tony Millard's Simmerton Stud. Out of former G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Sport's Chestnut, the colt is very closely to the recently deceased champion Horse Chestnut. Klipdrif, acting as agent on all 30 of their lots offered for sale, was the sales' leading vendor, with a gross aggregate of R11.515 million. The Robertson based farm finished clear of Ascot and Varsfontein Studs, who grossed R10.550 million and R9.8 million respectively. Form Bloodstock led the buyers table, purchasing 18 lots for a total of R14.135 million. Form headed the log ahead of Tony Millard (5 lots for R10.9 million), and Rattray Stud (3 lots R6.75 million). Former champion sire Silvano ended as the 2015 National Sale's top sire, with his 28 lots grossing R21.36 million. He was clear of Dynasty (whose offspring fetched up to R4.25million), who sold 12 lots for R14.25million, and Var, whose 26 lots grossed R10.35 million. The 2015 National Sale was also a triumphant for Mauritzfontein Stud's late, great sire Fort Wood, responsible not only for the record breaking filly but also the sire of Dynasty, whose progeny proved in great demand throughout the three day sale. Understandably, TBA CEO Kevin Woolward was more than pleased with the sale's outcome. Woolward said post-sale, "The National Sale this year was dominated by a very strong market but there was a distinct lack of any real middle market. The top buyers all targeted the same lots which resulted in the bottom market struggling. We are delighted, however, with the increase in both average and median, and it was also encouraging to see so many buyers attend this year's sale."
