PREVIEW:TURFFONTEIN - 25 APRIL 2015
<
Betting supplied by MBet
RACE 1:
The first race on the card is the only non-feature race on today's excellent card. MEISSA takes on stronger but has won his last two, both on the inside track. He has won this C & D twice from three starts. THE HANGMAN is back in form and should give another good account of himself. SHADOW OFHIS SMILE hardly ever runs a bad race and this could be one of those RUSHMORE RIVER is also C & D suited. BROOKS-CLUB takes a drop in class. He may now be better suited to the sand.
1st - MEISSA (4); 2nd - THE HANGMAN (2); 3rd - SHADOW OFHIS SMILE (1); 4th - RUSHMORE RIVER (7); 5th - BROOKS-CLUB (3)
RACE 2:
S A FILLIES NURSERY (Grade 2) - ENTISAAR to spearhead Mike De Kock's attack on day's feature races
Mike De Kock has a strong hand in the nine feature races this afternoon. While it will be unlikely that his horses will win all nine, there must be a chance that he could win a good few of them. He could begin his onslaught with the promising Australian bred, ENTISAAR. She has run twice, won on debut and against some horses that had run before, was not disgraced when finishing second last time. She did lose ground at the start that day and this could have had some effect on her not winning the race. She looked super impressive when winning her debut run at this track.
Trainer Corne Spies has a habit of winning a feature race or two on big race days. His best chance could be with SPEEDY SUZY, a two time winner from three starts. She beat ENTISAAR last time but lost to her by the identical margin the time before. Certainly one not without hope.
MELLA MARIA won on debut three runs back but then was beaten by ENTISAAR in her post maiden. Her latest run did show improvement and she could be watched for further improvement.
SAPSAN also finished a distance behind ENTISAAR the day she won but she looks to be turning the corner again and could run into the money.
Cape Town conditioner, Vaughan Marshall, sends out VARUMBA. She won very impressively last time when winning her maiden at the second attempt. If not needing to confirm, this daughter of VAR could make her rival pick up their feet.
1st - ENTISAAR (1); 2nd - SPEEDY SUZIE (9); 3rd - MELLA MARIA (5); 4th - SAPSAN (8); 5th - VARUMBA (10)
RACE 3:
GERALD ROSENBERG STAKES (Grade 2) - TAMAANEE well weighted to win
TAMAANEE could get trainer Sean Tarry's assault on the feature race scene for today underway when he sends out the highly respected TAMAANEE to contest the Grade 2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes. She has had three promising runs in grade 1 races behind SIREN'S CALL (twice) and MAJMU. Most of her older rivals are up in class today. She is certainly the one to beat, especially at the weights. The only concern could be the distance, but she invariably runs on over slightly shorter. At the weights she does look hard to beat and the quality and expectation is certainly there. Top jockey, S'Manga Khumalo has ridden her in all eight of her starts.
ERIN has the ability to win this race. Being a daughter of FORT WOOD, she has the credentials and she has won this C & D before and there is a hint that she is beginning to find her feet again.
SANTA CAROLINA promised so much earlier on but has yet to realise her potential at this level. Jockey Anthony Delpech has ridden her to two of her three victories for Mike De Kock. Don't rule out especially if she runs on.
The Gavin Van Zyl entry, MOHAVE PRINCESS, is better than her last effort in the Ipi Tombe. Any form return could see her earn something in this field.
Another Sean Tarry runner is AMBER ORCHID. Jockey Anton Marcus has had good success with her in her early career. At her best she will be a factor.
1st - TAMAANEE (11); 2nd - ERIN (2); 3rd - SANTA CAROLINA (6); 4th - MOHAVE PRINCESS (3); 5th - AMBER ORCHID (7)
RACE 4:
S A NURSERY (Grade 1) - layout the red carpet for REDCARPET STYLE
The first of five grade 1 races on Champions Day could go to the Gavin Van Zyl yard's REDCARPET STYLE. This two-year-old colt is unbeaten after two starts and in fact he looked so impressive in his latest win that he looks to be the one to beat. S'Manga Khumalo has ridden him to both victories.
ARABIAN BEAT ran a decent post maiden last time. he finished 2½ lengths behind REDCARPET STYLE last time and at level weights seems far more to catch up on the two time winner. Mike De Kock, never to be ignored in feature races, has SHAAMA, the filly. A daughter of REDOUTE'S CHOICE, she made a winning debut this course and distance last time. An interesting entry looks to be the Mike De Kock stable companion and first timer and another son of REDOUTE'S CHOICE, RAFEEF. One could be safe in assuming that Anthony Delpech may have had the choice of rides and has therefore chosen the filly over the colt.
ICSA made an impressive debut over 1000m last time, also at this track. Piere Strydom has the ride. This son of VAR may find the extra 160m slightly too far for now. Nevertheless he should be included in all bets and he is bound to improve.
1st - REDCARPET STYLE (13); 2nd - ARABIAN BEAT (1); 3rd - SHAAMA (14); 4th - RAFEEF (12); 5th - ICSA (7)
RACE 5:
COMPUTAFORM SPRINT (Grade 1) - CAPTAIN OF ALL has the class to win against strong field
This race has attracted most of the best sprinters in the country. The Dennis Drier sprinter, CAPTAIN OF ALL, heads the field for this Grade 1 sprint over the 1000m at Turffontein. He has won five from his nine starts. His last win at Scottsville last time was super impressive and left his field stone cold. He looks the one to beat. His biggest threat could be ALBORAN SEA, who beat him by half a length in the Cape Flying Championship in January. Today he meeting him on 1½kg better terms. Don't write off the chances of ALBORAN SEA as he does have class and has won this C & D. Trainer Mike De Kock will have him finely tuned for this race.
There are a host of horses with cases to suggest that they could win this race. FLY BY NIGHT was well beaten by ALBORAN SEA in the Cape Flying Championship. The Mike Bass yard has done well in Gauteng this season and can expect a very good run. He has very good form over the 1000m.
The much travelled Port Elizabeth runner, COPPER PARADE, is unbeaten this C & D (2 from 2). he has tasted victory in this race before and is one to be wary of. Gavin Lerena, who rode him last time in PE rides him again this afternoon.
TRIP TEASE is also unbeaten this C & D (3 from 3). This son of TRIPPI is top class and goes for his hat trick this afternoon.
1st - CAPTAIN OF ALL (1); 2nd - ALBORAN SEA (13); 3rd - FLY BY NIGHT (12); 4th - COPPER PARADE (2); 5th - TRIP TEASE (3)
RACE 6:
WILGERBOSDRIFT S A OAKS (Grade 1) - SIREN'S CALL to possibly take the Triple Tiara
Five wins from seven starts is the form that SIREN'S CALL brings into this Grade 1 race. Win this race this afternoon and she wins the Triple Tiara. She is is exceptional filly with an abundance of heart. Whatever the outcome one thing is for certain, she will be giving it her all at the line. She is is a gutsy filly and also one that shoes extreme heart and refuses to give up. Bred to go this trip, she has now won three in a row. Piere Strydom has piloted her in all five of her wins.
PINE PRINCESS is another filly who has been bred to get the 2000m but looks to be up against it here as she has been soundly beaten by her in her last two runs by SIREN'S CALL and at level weights should find it difficult to turn around five and three lengths beatings by SIREN'S CALL respectively.
EPSOM DOWNS, stable companion to SIREN'S CALL, is still rising in class. She flew up late last time to over the distance. She is still improving and this will be the strongest field she has had to face to date. This race may have come one run too early though. Nevertheless she could be the biggest improver in the field.
WITHBATEDBREATH also takes on stronger. In her favour is that she ran behind EPSOM DOWNS last time. ROSALIE finished behind both EPSOM DOWNS and WITHBATEDBREATH last time. Her form is decent.
1st - SIREN'S CALL (1); 2nd - PINE PRINCESS (2); 3rd - EPSOM DOWNS (7); 4th - WITHBATEDBREATH (6); 5th - ROSALIE (8)
RACE 7:
PRESIDENT'S CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (Grade 1) - MAJMU faces sternest test to date
MAJMU will be up against her strongest field to date. Her class is not up for debate as she has proved to be a filly of exceptional talent. If the going is soft, she has won in soft going before. She will be going over a a distance she has never ventured before but the way in which she has won the six from seven starts suggests that she should get the trip. Another factor one has to consider is that she is only a three year old filly taking on some of the best older horses in the country. Her only blemish was not as a result of a below par run but rather of interference in the home straight.
There is only one other three year old in the field. UNPARALLELED has also shown talent in his short career to date. His biggest problem is that he has been the subject of interference on numerous occasions. he has looked impressive and he should be right there at the line.
WYLIE HALL was the subject of late betting support last time. He will always be remembered for his desperately close second in last year's Vodacom Durban July. He was returning from a lengthy break last time and still won with ease. That was against slightly weaker and that prep run for this race will have brought him on well and he should be a threat yet again.
LOUIS THE KING was not at his best last time and that run should be ignored. Once again he will be partnered by Piere Strydom who must have to confidence in him to have wanted the ride once more. His feats of last season have been well documented and any repeat of that form would come as no surprise were he to finish first this afternoon. He will have his supporters.
HALVE THE DEFICIT hasn't won for a while but one can never ignore a Sean Tarry runner on a feature day race meeting.
1st - MAJMU (11); 2nd - UNPARALLELED (10); 3rd - WYLIE HALL (2); 4th - LOUIS THE KING (1); 5th - HALVE THE DEFICIT (3)
RACE 8:
S A DERBY (Grade 1) - ERTIJAAL to make amends for last run
ERTIJAAL lost his unbeaten record last time in the Grade 1 SA Classic at this track when she was badly interfered with when breaking from the starting stalls. She was a short priced favourite to win that race that day. He has the class to make amends for that run and restore the faith that his supporters have for him. He has impressed wherever the has run. Two runs back he trounced ACT OF WAR by almost five lengths at Kenilworth and we know just how good and as highly rated ACT OF WAR really is. It is going to take a supreme effort from the rest of the field to lower his colours for the second time in his career. Strangely enough Anthony Delpech returns to the saddle of ERTIJAAL. This will be the first time he has been aboard the colt since he made his debut at Greyville on the polytrack in November.
LEGAL EAGLE takes on much stronger this afternoon. It is not often that Anton Marcus rides for Sean Tarry, but he does ride for Markus and Ingrid Jooste, whose horse this is. He does look promising and his last win last time was despite him not being himself.
Sean Tarry sends out his better fancy for this race in FRENCH NAVY, who won the SA Classic last time when starting at only 8/1. He did beat ERTIJAAL by a distance last time. He could be the one to scuttle ERITJAAL'S hopes again. AMSTERDAM has run against top fields in his last two and was impressive when finishing a close up second to FRENCH NAVY last time. He will need some luck to beat both FRENCH NAVY and ERTIJAAL but could be another surprise package this afternoon.
DEPUTY JUD is in very good form and he too was hampered at the start along with ERTIJAAL last time. His run was a very good one under the circumstances when finishing a most creditable third with that effort. Definite money chance
1st - ERTIJAAL (3); 2nd - LEGAL EAGLE (7); 3rd - FRENCH NAVY (1); 4th - AMSTERDAM (2); 5th - DEPUTY JUD (4)
RACE 9:
CAMELLIA STAKES (Grade 2) - WINTER STAR to shine brightly
WINTER STAR did not show in the Grade 1 Empress Club last time. That day she started at 150/1. That was in a class higher than today's race. She is unlikely to be at such generous odds this afternoon but she could be a good value bet. Her ability is not in question but her latest run is! Prior to that run she did run well against weaker. Expect an improved run this afternoon in this division and over this C & D where she has won and placed second before, in only three attempts at this C & D.
VIRGO'S BABE bounced back to form this class last time with some fantastic improvement. She is another who has shown a distinct liking for this C & D. ATHINA won last year's SA Classic for fillies. Her class in not in doubt. She just needs to come somewhere close to that run to perform this afternoon. She came back to best when running second to INARA in the Grade 1 at Kenilworth in the Paddock Stakes last time. Johnny Geroudis, back from Mauritius, partners her for the first time.
TZIGANE won well in a similar field this C & D last time. She can repeat. KZN trainer sends up PEJ for this race. She is no stranger to this track and distance and with Anton Marcus aboard she must have a chance of earning something at least.
1st - WINTER STAR (5); 2nd - VIRGO'S BABE (3); 3rd - ATHINA (1); 4th - TZIGANE (2); 5th - PEJ (6)
RACE 10:
GOLD BOWL (Grade 2) - MINES to close down meeting
KINGSTON MINES looks set to close down the final meeting of the Highveld Season this afternoon. Whatever the outcome of this race, the day is always a huge success and as followers of this, the Sport Of Kings, dream of race meetings like this with such an array of top thoroughbreds.
KINGSTON MINES is an out and out stayer and has won over slightly shorter and quite a bit further in the past. he has won his last two in excellent style, both with Gavin Lerena aboard. Mike De Kock has employed him to ride this four year old again. Being only four years old one may be correct in assuming that he will get even better over the marathon events as he gets older.
HEART OF A LION was unlucky when finishing behind KINGSTON MINES last time as he had his heels clipped in running. May finish closer and is a ½ kg better off for a length and a half beating.
LIONS EMBLEM shows heart but is also only a ½ kg better off for a length and a quarter beating.
The other Mike De Kock runner, RAAEES, is well held by KINGSTON MINES, but one can expect a decent run with Anthony Delpech aboard again. He looks to prefer KZN, but he should improve up on the Highveld.
SAVAGE WIND could be the biggest improver in the race and is worth including for a few place bets and quartets/trifectas.
1st - KINGSTON MINES (2); 2nd - HEART OF A LION (4); 3rd - LIONS EMBLEM (8); 4th - RAAEES (9); 5th - SAVAGE WIND (12)
