WILGERBOSDRIFT S A OAKS (Grade 1) - PINE PRINCESS pips SIREN'S CALL at the line
The start to the Grade 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks was delayed while the well fancied and heavily backed SIREN'S CALL spread a shoe and had to be reshod. It was clear that she was unsettled as a result and this could have had an affect on the outcome of the race. The debate will linger on for many weeks to come.
Take nothing away fro PINE PRINCESS who showed that she too has champion status about her. This was yet another "ding - dong" battle over the last 400m with nothing else really looking like a challenger. Once again trainers Mike De Kock and Sean Tarry fought out another feature race.
The eventual start to the race was a good one with BILATERAL and CENTENARY looking to take the early lead. PINE PRINCESS was well placed in the early stages while SIREN'S CALL had to race wide near the back of the field.
The stable companion of PINE PRINCESS, CENTENARY ensure the perfect pace for PINE PRINCESS as she led for most of the race. BILATERAL was next best from OLMA and LEMON TEA, who was prominent early on. PINE PRINCESS was content to race midfield with SIREN'S CALL a few lengths back but in touch.
PINE PRINCESS led around the final turn by three lengths with SIREN'S CALL thirteen lengths back.
PINE PRINCESS soon moved up but she was challenged by SIREN'S CALL who was finding all the while. In the last 400m the lead changed hands on a number of occasions and the outcome was uncertain until the line.
PATCHIT UP BABY was running on for third while BILATERAL stayed on for fourth.
The win pushed PINE PRINCESS'S winnings up to just over R1,2 million.
