Gold Challenge attracts classy entries

The stars are set to glitter at Greyville Racecourse in two weeks’ time, Saturday 6 June 2015, when they form a galaxy at the 1 600m starting post for the R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge.

It is where the country’s two best colts, Futura and Legislate, will go up against one another in what could be seen as a match race with the balance of the field seeing a third place as likely their best possibly finishing position.

Trainer Justin Snaith, who now has the J&B Met winner Futura - formerly with Brett Crawford - in his yard, has indicated that they will both run in the race which will make this one of the most exciting races of the season. Both are Vodacom Durban July entries and are guaranteed their positions in that field but the Rising Sun Gold Challenge will not be used as a warm-up and both will be racing to lift the R625 000 first place cheque.

The entry list for this race, previously the premier event at the now defunct Clairwood course, includes some top performers including the highly rated three-year-old Dynasty colt Act Of War from the Joey Ramsden stable. The colt has won seven of his nine starts including the Cape Classic, Selangor Cup, Cape Guineas and Winter Guineas and finished second to Ertijaal in the Investec Cape Derby.

Also among the entries is the runner-up in the J&B Met Gold Onyx from the Sean Tarry stable that won the Drill Hall Stakes along with Bouclette Top and Ashton Park that followed him home and runners-up in the Betting World 1900 Power King and Punta Arenas. Third and fourth in the Premiers Champion Challenge at Turffontein, No Worries and Halve The Deficit, are also among the nominations.

The Grade 3 Cup Trial over 1 800m has drawn a massive entry of 41 including some of those entered for the Rising Sun Gold Challenge, but the winner of the Betting World 1900, Dynastic Power from the Stan Elley stable, has only been entered in the Cup Trial. Elley is probably looking to have both his July entries putting up top performances to improve their chances of a big race run.

Also drawing a large entry for the June 6 meeting is the Grade 2 Tibouchina Stakes with more than half the 31 nominees being three-year-old fillies headed by the daughter of Mambo In Seattle from the Duncan Howells stable, Same Jurisdiction. She is the winner of the Thekwini Stakes and the Flamboyant Stakes and was second in the SA Fillies Classic at Turffontein.

Alexis from the Brett Crawford stable, winner of the KRA Fillies Guineas is among the entries along with Ataab and One Fine Day that finished third and fourth in that race.
