Guineas double for Irish bred

GLENEAGLES (IRE) added to his impressive Newmarket success when taking the Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday. Ryan Moore brought the Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Galileo (IRE) from well off the pace to win from Ballylinch Stud’s Lope de Vega (IRE) colt Endless Drama (IRE) and Ivawood (IRE), a son of Tally-Ho Stud-sire Zebedee. He became just the eighth horse to win the English/Irish 2,000 Guineas double and was his trainer’s tenth winner of the race. Gleneagles (IRE) remains in the Epsom Derby in two weeks’ time but his immediate target is far from clear. He is now a three-time Group 1 winner and was bred by the You’resothrilling Syndicate who is named after his Group 2 winning dam. He is a full-brother to last season’s Group 1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Marvellous (IRE) and his dam is a full-sister to the great Giant’s Causeway.

ROUND TWO (IRE) remains unbeaten in two starts after his impressive win in the Listed Cold Move EBF Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday. Bred and trained by Jim Bolger, the son of Teofilo (IRE) runs in the blue silks of Godolphin and was far too good for Ballydoyle’s Washington DC (IRE), a son of freshman sire Zoffany (IRE). Paying a handsome tribute, Bolger said, “He is everything you would like in a racehorse. I have never had a horse that’s as straightforward as he is, and the trip doesn’t seem to matter. It doesn’t matter where you put him in a race; it doesn’t matter how you train him.” Round Two (IRE) is the first foal out of Khazina, who was bought at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale for €25,000 in 2011. Her dam Easy Now was a winner over six furlongs and is out of a Grade 1 winning half-sister to nine-time Grade 1 winner Easy Goer and the Grade 1 winner Cadillacing.

PLEASCACH (IRE) put up a gutsy display to win the Group 1 Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas for his breeder and trainer Jim Bolger at the Curragh on Sunday. Running in the colours of his wife Jackie, the son of Teofilo (IRE) was in front under Kevin Manning under two furlongs from home and held off the sustained challenge of the Galileo (IRE) filly Found (IRE) to win by half-a-length. Devonshire (IRE), a son of Rathasker Stud’s Fast Company (IRE) chased the pair home to finish third. Pleascach (IRE) continues to improve and will now run in both the Irish Derby and the Irish Oaks at the Curragh. She is now a three time winner from just five starts and her trainer said, “She has a nice bit of toe and is basically not a miler. The Guineas is a bonus. It worked out well with a strong pace. She’s a relentless galloper with a turn of foot”. She is the second foal out Bolger’s dual winner Toirneach who was fourth in the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown. She is a half-sister to two multiple winners in America out of a half-sister to Drina, the dam of Breeders’ Cup Dustaff winner Spain.

The rapidly improving CURVY, a daughter of Coolmore Stud-sire Galileo (IRE), took the Group 3 Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday. The winner of two handicaps at Navan already this season, David Wachman’s three-year-old will now bid for further Group race glory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot next month. She got her head in front inside the final furlong and held off Giovanni Canaletto (IRE), a son of Galileo (IRE), to win by a neck, with Prince Gagarin (IRE) back in third. Curvy is the twelfth foal out of Frappe (IRE), a half-sister to 2,000 Guineas winner and sire Footstepsinthesand, Phoenix Stakes winner Pedro The Great and Group 2 placed Belle D’Or. Frappe (IRE) has also produced Ribblesdale Stakes winner Thakafaat (IRE) and sire Power, winner of the National Stakes and Irish 2,000 Guineas.
