LONSDALE STIRRUP CUP (Grade 3) - SOLID SPEED records a hat trick of wins for Dean Kannemeyer yard

LONSDALE STIRRUP CUP (Grade 3) - SOLID SPEED records a hat trick of wins for Dean Kannemeyer yard

Cape Town trainer continued with his success during the Durban and KZN Winter Season when his lightly raced four year old son of DYNASTY confirmed favouritism to win the first of three features on the Greyville card on Saturday afternoon. On a hot autumn afternoon in Durban, jockey Donovan Dillon warmed him up well for the race by taking him the long way around of the track down to the start.

Once again RAAEES was slow away and for only a brief moment during the running of the race looked to have a chance. Besides that, the start was a good one with the field given every chance along the long back straight to find good positions. The pace was a decent one throughout. The early leaders were KOLKATA from GREAT RUMPUS and COLTRANE. That order did not last long. The Gavin Van Zyl runner, SUN ON AFRICA led for most of the way around the distance from GREAT RUMPUS, CURRENT EVENT, GONE BABY GONE and KOLKATA.

SUN ON AFRICA tried to steal a march at the top of the straight but at the 400m mark began to fade fast. The favourite, who had shortened in the betting during the course of the day, burst through towards the middle outside to claim t5he advantage and win going away. Also running on well were DISCO AL, another Cape Town horse, ridden by Anton Marcus and the unfancied gavin Van Zyl runner, HEART OF A LION.

SOLID SPEED has now won five from nine starts and earnings just over R380 000. He is now unbeaten over this 2400m trip with three from three. According to trainer Dean Kannemeyer, he could be set to contest the Gold Cup at the end of July over the marathon distance of 3200m. The way in which he won this afternoon, this son of DYNASTY should see out the extra.
