WOOLAVINGTON 2000 (Grade 1) - Distance, pace and track suits SMART CALL

SMART CALL came right back to form this afternoon when she won the Grade 1 Woolavington over 2000m at Greyville in the second feature of the day. With the scratching in the morning of the highly acclaimed MAJMU, the race always appeared to have an open look to it. INARA, from the Mike Bass yard was sent out as favourite. She has been beaten in three Grade 1 races, two when SIREN'S CALL won and once when MAJMU won.

Gauteng based trainer, Alec Laird, adopted different tactics this afternoon and instead of setting the pace decided to have jockey Weichong Marwing settle her down off the pace. Jockey Weichong Marwing had recovered in time from a back injury to ride this daughter of IDEAL WORLD. This was the sire's first Grade 1 winner in this country.

SILVER CLASS fly jumped and almost dislodged her jockey at the start. The race was run at a slow pace and that suited the tactics of SMART CALL. The first to show was PINE PRINCESS, the Mike De Kock runner, TAMAANEE, from the Sean Tarry yard, and SMART CALL. The favourite, INARA, was also handily placed.

PINE PRINCESS led for almost the entire race with the balance jockeying for the share of the leading pack. INDABA also found a good position. At the 600m mark the pace picked up with PINE PRINCESS making a bold dash for home. TAMAANEE was still there along with INDABA and SMART CALL who found herself along the outside running rail and finding a strong finish. The other Sean tarry runner, TROPHY WIFE was also finding a good finish. The favourite, INARA, had to switch in for a run and only really found room late but had too much to do.

The win of SMART CALL was her third from ten and her biggest win to date. Her earnings have now reached R900 000. Watch again over similar distances.
