DAILY NEWS 2000 (Grade 1) - Salute the FRENCH NAVY
Most of the country's eyes were set on SIREN'S CALL, the filly taking on a competitive field of males. FRENCH NAVY ran very much under the radar and literally gunned the field down over the last 150m. This win gave jockey Raymond Danielson his third feature race winner of the weekend, having won both feature races in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
The start was marred at the start when for the second time this Durban Winter Season Justin Snaith lost his runner from the race when he kicked the back gate whilst in the starting stalls. The start was not the best but as soon as the field settled down the order was RUN RHINO RUN, who bounded along at a moderate pace, from MLJET, AMSTERDAM and ILLUMINATI. It did not take long for the field to stretch itself out to about sixteen lengths.
RUN RHINO RUN led for a major part of the race but could not sustain it. The well fancied SIREN'S CALL did not run true to her form. This could have been for a number of reasons, two of which could have been the short straight and the wide draw. Jockey Piere Strydom battled to get her going throughout the race. She is not one to ignore in future Grade 1 races and this race is best ignored.
ERTIJAAL, the Mike De Kock runner, will come on for with this run and should be a serious runner in the remaining Grade 1 races during the Winter Season. Another horse that is worthy of mention is the Joey Ramsden runner, THE CONGLOMERATE who was not disgraced in third.
Credit must go to jockey Raymond Danielson who brought this son of COUNT DUBOIS to the inside and after having been switched off during the race, found a strong finish to win going away. His last run at Turffontein is best ignored as the going and distance did not suit that day in the SA Derby. FRENCH NAVY will have shortened in the betting for the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July in five weeks time by Monday morning.
This win, his fourth from ten runs has taken his winning to well over the R3 million mark. This was another Grade 1 win for Champion Trainer elect, Sean Tarry.
