WINTER DERBY (Grade 3) - The grey, LIQUID MERCURY relishes the extra
The Joey Ramsden trained son of TRIPPI, LIQUID MERCURY, won the Grade 3 Winter Derby, under jockey Bernard Fayd'Herbe, who rode an excellent race, at Kenilworth this afternoon. The extra distance appears to have suited LIQUID MERCURY. Racing from off the pace, he quickened well in the straight to win going away. This win, his fifth from eleven starts has pushed his earning to over R450 000. He cost just under R800 000 at the Cape Yearling Sales in 2013 and if he were to repeat this run, should not take much longer to recoup that outlay.
SEIZE THE THRONE was the first to show from MY WORLD, MASTER'S EYE and PARACHUTE MAN. The initial pace was a decent one. SEIZE THE THRONE led the race for most of it. LIQUID MERCURY was always well placed and it was no surprise to see him move up well in the home straight. With 400m EVEN SO moved up to take a short-lived lead from SEIZE THE THRONE, who was beginning to fade out of contention.
With 200m left LIQUID MOTION was finishing strongly and assumed the lead. MASTER'S EYE rallied back for second from the fast finishing ROYAL DREAMER and NIGHT IN SEATTLE.
