PREVIEW: GREYVILLE (DAY/NIGHT) (TURF/POLYTRACK) - 4 JULY 2015
|
PREVIEW:GREYVILLE - 4 JULY 2015
RACE 1:
FULCRUM ran an excellent comeback run when returning from an eighteen month break. Will strip fitter this afternoon and should go close. FIREWOOD has yet to finish out of the money in five runs with two wins. Will be running on. GUMBI has excellent form but takes on stronger. Has won two from four with to thirds. VALERIN showed good improvement at Scottsville last time. Has a money chance. MASTER ARCHER drops in class but needs a better finish.
1st - FULCRUM (9); 2nd - FIREWOOD (6); 3rd - GUMBI (11); 4th - VALERIN (5); 5th - MASTER ARCHER (4)
RACE 2:
RESOLUTION may be coming back to best. She loves this track and has a good shout in this field. LERTASHA ran on strongly to win on the line against stronger last time. First time in KZN but is well weighted and has Richard Fourie aboard. GREEN CREST showed huge improvement last time. Did get going late at a starting price of 75/1. Piere Strydom has the ride. PRINCESS TANTAN is a reserve runner. Place chance if getting into the race. CATHY SPECIFIC takes on stronger but did win well last time.
1st - RESOLUTION (2); 2nd - LERTASHA (11); 3rd - GREEN CREST (6); 4th - PRINCESS TANTAN (13); 5th - CATHY SPECIFIC (4)
RACE 3: THE tabGOLD 2200 (Grade 3) - ST TROPEZ could go top of the mountain
The first feature on today's card could be trickier than first meets the eye. ST TROPEZ did win the East Cape Derby two runs back. That was an impressive win as he had to make up for some ground lost at the start. He has, bar the first two runs of his career, been the subject of heavy betting support. He was only ever out of the first three when he made his debut at Kenilworth in October last year. he has won on four occasions and finished second twice. He won his KZN debut three runs back at this track. He is bred to stay and will be involved at the finish.
DYNAMIC was a reserve runner for the Vodacom Durban July. He has steady form coming into this race and the fact that he was in the final twenty for the big race gives his presence some credence. He ran on for third in the Cup Trial last time. Last year's winning July trainer (Justin Snaith) and jockey (Richard Fourie) will be looking to prove the handicappers wrong.
SUN ON AFRICA won a lower division handicap last time. He ran a good race that day and must be given something of a chance, be it a small one. He did not show three runs back when finishing eighth behind LEGAL EAGLE in the SA Derby. This field isn't quite as strong though.
DOUBLE CLUTCH is never too far back. He has shown some decent form against stronger fields. The history of this horses has been a remarkable on. He made a miraculous recovery early in his career when he was not expected to be alive at one stage. His recovery has been almost miraculous and will have his supporters this afternoon.
KILLUA CASTLE finished a close up second to LOUIS THE KING in the Grade 1 Summer Cup and then won the London News before failing to show in the J & B Met. He has been finding form and on class is by no means out of the mix.
If you are looking for a huge upset, then the Mike Bass trained MOUNTAIN MASTER could be the one to add to all permutations. His penultimate run to DYNASTIC POWER in the Greyville 1900 is certainly worth considering.
1st - ST TROPEZ (12); 2nd - DYNAMIC (2); 3rd - SUN ON AFRICA (14); 4th - DOUBLE CLUTCH (3); 5th - KILLUA CASTLE (1); UPSET CHANCE - MOUNTAIN MASTER (8)
RACE 4: SABC GOLD VASE (Grade 2) - HEART OF A LION is a stayer of note
There are no stamina doubts about HEART OF A LION. He has shown very good form over the longer distance races in his last three starts and he has also been finishing well. he takes on a bit stronger than last time but has raced against some good sorts in his career. The Gavin Van Zyl trained inmate has improved in his last three starts. A win here will see him become a contender for the Gold Cup at the end of the month. Muzi Yeni has ridden him in all three of his last three starts and finished third on each occasion.
Cape Town conditioner, Dean Kannemeyer, sends out the four year old son of DYNASTY, SOLID SPEED. The DYNASTY progeny run well at this track. In fact DYNASTY was himself a Durban July winner. The yard has such terrific KZN form that it would come as a surprise if he did not fill one of the top two finishes. SOLID SPEED is unbeaten at this track (2 from 2). He has an excellent late turn of speed and should see out the extra. Stable jockey, Karl Neisius, has the ride.
CRIME VICTIM drops in class but steps up in distance. He is usually slow off the mark, but he will be running on late. Expect another top run from this Duncan Howells trained four year old. He will have the added bonus of having S'Manga Khumalo in the irons.
WILD ASH is holding form well. The Geoff Woodruff yard has had a quiet KZN Season but with Piere Strydom aboard he could run into the money. He won aboard WILD ASH in the only time he rode him.
J'S OUTSIDER could be just that. He did not show in his latest run when making the move from Gauteng to the Dennis Drier yard in May. He could be given another chance but I do think he is way too inconsistent to win this afternoon.
1st - HEART OF A LION (2); 2nd - SOLID SPEED (1); 3rd - CRIME VICTIM (4); 4th - WILD ASH (8); 5th - J'S OUTSIDER (7)
RACE 5: ZULU KINGDOM EXPLORER GOLDEN SLIPPER (Grade 1) - Royal Day in prospect for PRINCESS ROYAL
The first of four Grade 1 races on Vodacom Durban July Day sees the two year old fillies go to the post for the 1400m event. The entire field takes the step up in class. The draw could play a vital role in the outcome of the race. The Glen Kotzen trained PRINCESS ROYAL is well drawn with good form as well. This daughter of CAPTAIN AL has won two of her five starts, but all of her runs have been over shorter. She is bred to get this distance and further. Watch for a good late run and the way in which she finishes suggests that she will not be deterred by the extra 200m. She is a classy filly and she has a very bright future ahead of her, jockey Greg Cheyne has ridden her on all five occasions.
Mike Azzie has had a fantastic Durban Winter Season with the horses he has sent down from Gauteng. FROSTED HONEY won on debut three runs back. She was not disgraced in the Nursery at Turffontein in late April. That was her last run before her short two month break. Expect a good effort from this daughter of WESTERN WINTER, who looks to be one that will improve with time. One thing is for certain, she will be impeccably turned out for the occasion.
Expect a day in which trainer Mike De Kock stakes a claim on the day's proceedings. The Australian bred ALMASHOOQA has had two good post maiden runs, but it must be said, against considerably weaker. One does not expect to see a Mike De Kock horse entered into a Grade 1 feature without a realistic chance of winning. Watch for improvement from this Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum owned filly. She should go into the larger Pick Six perms.
Only two Durban trainers look likely to pick up any Grade 1 trophies today. One will be Dennis Drier who has CHESTNUTS N PEARLS in this race and SEVENTH PLAIN in the next race and Duncan Howells with SAME JURISDICTION in the ninth race. CHESTNUTS N PEARLS ran in the Alan Robertson in her post maiden last time. She showed good early pace in that race but faded badly. That was only her second start and she is still learning what racing is all about. The extra 200m will suit this smart looking daughter of HORSE CHESTNUT.
MELLA MARIA is another Mike Azzie runner. She has two wins under her belt. She was given a run at Greyville last time, a race she duly won over 1300m. The extra 100m should suit. She can earn a small prize in this race.
1st - PRINCESS ROYAL (11); 2nd - FROSTED HONEY (4); 3rd - ALMASHOOQA (1); 4th - CHESTNUTS N PEARLS (3); 5th - MELLA MARIA (7)
RACE 6: DURBAN GOLDEN HORSESHOE (Grade 1) - Could be seventh heaven for SEVENTH PLAIN
The two year old son of SEVENTH ROCK, SEVENTH PLAIN has won three of his four starts. This smart looking horse looks to be the best bet for KZN Grade 1 success on today's card. Dennis Drier has won a Grade 1 race with already when he won the Gold Medallion at Scottsville six weeks ago. He looked most impressive that day when backed in on the day from 4/1 to start at 22/10. he never disappointed his supporters that day and looks unlikely to do that either this afternoon. He began his career in excellent fashion when he beat the talented BUCKINGHAMSHIRE on debut. His only blemish was when he lost to the same horse next time out. he has since won his last two in impressive style and goes for the hat trick. Anton Marcus who rode him to victory on each of his last two wins, rides again this afternoon.
The Gavin Van Zyl trained REDCARPET CAPTAIN finished second behind SEVENTH PLAIN last time. At equal weights it appears unlikely that he can overturn the order. S'Manga Khumalo has ridden him in all four of his runs and rides him again this afternoon. He should improve over the extra distance and that difference between the two could be a bit closer although if setting off as he did over 1200m last time, he could be found wanting in the latter stages again today. The wide draw of seventeen is sure to have some influence on his chances, especially over 1400m.
MUWAARY has won two from his three starts. He finished behind both SEVENTH PLAIN and REDCARPET CAPTAIN when they met in the Gold Medallion. The Mike De Kock trained Australian bred two year old did win by four lengths when travelling over 1300m last time and the extra 100m looks to be well within his ambit. Watch for further improvement but the wide draw is bound to affect his chances. Anthony Delpech will ride again.
The Gauteng raider, ARABIAN BEAT has won three from four starts, all over nothing further than 1160m. Rightfully so, he will have many supporters. He looked super impressive last time when he won by four lengths last time. Admittedly, that was against weaker, but he could hardly have done more than he did that day and his ability should see him earn something again today. Craig Zackey rides him for the fifth time from five starts.
BRAZUCA is still a maiden but she did make an eye catching debut last time. He will have one of the best jockeys in the business, Weichong Marwing aboard. he would be a surprise winner but could be included in larger exotic bets.
1st - SEVENTH PLAIN (14); 2nd - REDCARPET CAPTAIN (13); 3rd - MUWAARY (10); 4th - ARABIAN BEAT (1); 5th - BRAZUCA (3)
RACE 7: 4 JULY 2015- VODACOM DURBAN JULY
This year's Vodacom Durban July looks to be another to live up to its history, drama and jolly good racing.
Trainer Sean Tarry sends out five of the eighteen runners. Of the five, LEGAL EAGLE looks to be the one the other seventeen horses have to beat. The three year old son of GREYS INN, himself a July winner, has had two fantastic Grade 1 wins coming into this race. She won the SA Derby over 2450m at Turffontein at the end of April when racing away from the field by three lengths. He followed that up by winning the Jubilee Handicap, also at Turffontein, by four and a half lengths. He produced a strong finish from about 300m out to win that one comfortable. He was not received any penalty for that latest win and should be carrying 57kg and not the 54kg he will have on his back this afternoon. He is the best weighted horse in the field. He has had only a short career thus far but has shown enough class to suggest that he should be the one to beat. From his six runs he has won four of them. His only blemish was on debut in October last year when he failed to show. He was not backed on debut and would have clearly needed the run. Jockey Anton Marcus, who won on him in his last two starts, has the ride once again. The only question mark against his name could be the fact that he has yet to see the Greyville circuit.
For those who will be looking for a horse to make the quartets pay, then ICE MACHINE could be the one. He did win the Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m by three lengths last time when sent out as favourite. He was slow off that day but did run on well. In the 2014 running of the J & B Met he did finish three lengths behind HILL FIFTY FOUR. Whilst there are far better horses in this field with more of a winning chance, he could be the one to sneak a place. He has won up to 1800m before so the distance could be a worry.
Trainer Stan Elley sends out a horse for the last time in this race. What better way to end an illustrious career than a win with PUNTA ARENAS who will be running in this race for the third occasions. He did finish less than four lengths back in sixth last year. He has been running on well in recent starts and he won the Cup Trial at this track a few weeks ago. He comes into this race with a chance of earning something. This will be his third run after a creditable fifth behind FUTURA in the J & B Met earlier in the year.
There will be an abundance of support for WYLIE HALL, who crossed the line first last year and lost it, some thought, in controversial manner in the board room. He won his last two with Bernard Fayd'Herbe in the saddle. Once again he will partner WYLIE HALL. He beat MAJMU by over a lengths in the Grade 1 President's Champions Challenge at Turffontein at the end of April. He has had the ideal preparation and this five year old Australian bred should go close again this year. If the going happens to be soft, then this would enhance his chances even more.
TELLINA finished a good fourth behind FUTURA in the J & B at the beginning of the year. He will be running on and he finished third in a pinnacle stakes behind HALVE THE DEFICIT last time at Turffontein. He should be added to the quartets and trifectas.
Trainer Mike Bass knows how to win this race. He saddles HELDERBERG BLUE who looks to be improving at the write time. Do not write his chances off. He is often sent to the front to set the pace. He employed these tactics in the J & B Met and stayed on for third.
Another trainer familiar with the number one box in the July, as well as in the other centres world wide, is Mike De Kock. MAJMU is a superb three year old filly with an impressive record of six wins from eight starts. She finished just over a lengths behind WYLIE HALL last time but is ½kg worse off at the weights for that loss. One does feel though that she is still improving and one has to respect her, even in this tough environment.
One cannot discount the brilliant FUTURA, who has amassed almost R3½ million. Last year he finished less than a length behind LEGISLATE in this race and he was running on extremely well. Last time he flew late for fourth in the Gold Challenge at this track over 1600m. We must also not forget his brilliant win in the J & B Met earlier in the year. Carrying 60kg will not be unfamiliar to him. He will have his supporters, and rightly so, a win will not be out of possibility.
FRENCH NAVY won the Daily News at this track over 2000m last time. Last year LEGISLATE won the Daily News and then the July in consecutive races. There will be a nice price about him.
PINE PRINCESS has done very little wrong and could place at best.
1st - LEGAL EAGLE (10); 2nd - ICE MACHINE (3); 3rd - PUNTA ARENAS (9); 4th - WYLIE HALL (2); - 5th - TELLINA (11)
RACE 8: CANON BUSINESS CENTRE HANDICAP (Listed)
ARNISTON won well when finding best form again last time. That was against a somewhat stronger field and that run needs to be respected. That was his first win in a little over a year. RAMPANT ICE ran a very good race in the Daily News behind FRENCH NAVY last time he finished fourth that day and should be a far closer finisher this afternoon. THE HANGMAN has been threatening to win again. he needs to repeat his juvenile form. KOCHKA has won against stronger before but form is a bit patchy at present. EASY LOVER did not have the clearest of runs last time. Ignore that run.
1st - ARNISTON (10); 2nd - RAMPANT ICE (1); 3rd - THE HANGMAN (4); 4th - KOCHKA (2); 5th - EASY LOVER (13)
RACE 9: JONSSON WORKWEAR GARDEN PROVINCE STAKES (Grade 1) - Good contest expected with CARRY ON ALICE to shine
CARRY ON ALICE was a fluent winner of the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint at Scottsville six weeks ago. Her win that day was a top class win. She still has to show that she is suited to the "mile" even though she has finished second this C & D before. She is well drawn for this race and jockey S'Manga Khumalo has ridden her in twelve of her fourteen starts for five wins, four seconds and three thirds. On the two occasions she failed to earn was when two different jockeys rode her for Sean Tarry. She looks hard to beat but she will have some strong opposition.
The Mike Bass trained HAMMIE'S HOOKER finished a close second to the sensational BEACH BEAUTY in this race last year. On that run she must have an outstanding chance of going a few centimeters closer this time around. She has the best draw and should be finishing well. her run when second to one of the fancies for the July, MAJMU, in the Empress Club Stakes at Turffontein two runs back on a track with which she was not familiar. Big race day jockey, Bernard Fayd'Herbe has the ride. He has already won nine of her ten wins times when aboard.
SAME JURISDICTION is ½kg better off for a half a length defeat in the Tibouchina Stakes over 1400m last time. This is by far her best distance. She ran on well in the Tibouchina last time and could reverse the order over the C & D she is unbeaten (2 from 2). The draw of 14 may count against her. Jockey Anton Marcus riding for Duncan Howells, has the ride, which will be a big plus factor.
SMART CALL won in her only start at this track last time when she beat PINE PRINCESS in the Woolavington, who has a money chance in the big one in the seventh race. On her run in the Empress Club Stakes in her penultimate she has quite a bit to find.
INARA finished behind SMART CALL last time in the Woolavington. She will have a chance if repeating some of her previous Cape Town form where she did finish second to MAJMU in the Fillies Guineas in December. She did finish 2,5 lengths back that day, but that was when MAJMU had that invincible look about her. The dark horse with a good draw. Grant Van Niekerk rides rides her for the tenth time from eleven starts. She is ideally distance suited.
1st - CARRY ON ALICE (9); 2nd - HAMMIE'S HOOKER (1); 3rd - SAME JURISDICTION (10); 4th - SMART CALL (12); 5th - INARA (11)
RACE 10:
TIGER TIGER hasn't won in well over a year but he did show some improvement last time and has to be given a decent shout. At 8/1 he offers value. BARBOSA is a top class sprinter and is back over his more favoured distance. Yet to run on the polytrack. MUSCATT has very good form. Was not disgraced in third last time when finishing less than half a length behind PEJ in a pinnacle stakes race at this C & D. ROCK ME VAR won his last two, his first two at this track. Yard in terrific KZN form. Can win again. MR WHATEVER is a distance specialist with more to do for the win.
1st - TIGER TIGER (6); 2nd - BARBOSA (1); 3rd - MUSCATT (3); 4th - ROCK ME VAR (8); 5th - MR WHATEVER (2)
RACE 11: eTHEKWINI SPRINT (Non-Black Type) - For 3-year-olds
BELONG TO ME has good sprinting form. he won well at this track last time after having shown good early speed and then proceeded to hold on well. Anton Marcus rides for the first time. TRIPTIQUE has run six times for three wins and three seconds. Should be finishing well. Anton Marcus rides. ISPHAN hasn't won for almost a year. Stayed on when making his KZN debut on the turf last time. Stayed on well. EQUITY KICKER is never far back and has been finishing well in his last three. LOVE TO SAIL runs on well and can earn.
1st - BELONG TO ME (2); 2nd - TRIPTIQUE (7); 3rd - ISPHAN (3); 4th - EQUITY KICKER (9); 5th - LOVE TO SAIL (12)
RACE 12: KZN YEARLING SALE MILLION (Non-Blk Type) - For 2 year olds
ROYAL PLEASURE was below her best last time after having won her first three. All four of her runs were at Scottsville. She will be running on and expect another good run. NATAL won very impressively on debut last time. This will be her toughest assignment to date. Looks to have scope. CHOSEN DASH ran a very good post maiden when running on and then followed that up with an impressive win last time. JUST AS I SAID won against weaker last time. First KZN run. VAR'S DREAM ran on well on debut last time. May need to con firm.
1st - ROYAL PLEASURE (13); 2nd - NATAL (7); 3rd - CHOSEN DASH (1); 4th - JUST AS I SAID (5); 5th - VAR'S DREAM (10)
