PREVIEW: GREYVILLE (TURF/POLYTRACK) - 1 AUGUST 2015

PREVIEW:GREYVILLE -  1 AUGUST 2015

RACE 1:

Gauteng raider GAME OF THRONES is a three time winner from ten starts. His form has improved in recent starts and he does do his best work late. Two of his three wins have been over the distance. ALL TOGETHER NOW won his maiden this C & D three runs back and looks set to pick up his second win soon. SPACE LAUNCH takes a huge drop in class and is the most consistent horse in the race. MACKDESI has been slow in recent times but does find a decent finish. Is a C & D winner. FIRST DANCE also drops in class but has been off form.

1st - GAME OF THRONES (8); 2nd - ALL TOGETHER NOW (7); 3rd - SPACE LAUNCH (2); 4th - MACKDESI (6); 5th - FIRST DANCE (1)

RACE 2:

TIME MARCHES ON drops in class but ran a fair race last time. Stayed on better last time and looks to have some more improvement to come. GREY LIGHT looks to have a shout on improved form. PEACE AGAIN finished strongly last time to win her second race. IN OTHER WORDS has won two out of three. Both wins this C & D and looks to be above average. LOVE TO SAIL has more to find on last two starts but one has to respect trainer and jockey combination.

1st - TIME MARCHES ON (4); 2nd - GREY LIGHT (2); 3rd - PEACE AGAIN (7); 4th - IN OTHER WORDS (6); 5th - LOVE TO SAIL (3)

RACE 3:

CAPE SPEED has been slow to break in both starts but flew up late last time in an improved run. MOOGHAMIR made a decent debut last time when unfancied. TEAM GUYS has improved in his last two. Will have a say. GREY'S A ROCKIN is never too far back and has a money chance. JUST LIKE MAGIC is a slow starter and has more to do but can find a quartet place.

1st - CAPE SPEED (1); 2nd - MOOGHAMIR (6); 3rd - TEAM GUYS (9); 4th - GREY'S A ROCKIN (2); 5th - JUST LIKE MAGIC (4)

RACE 4:

NEW FORT has improved in his last two. Should be suited to this distance. GOLDEN HIGH drops in class. Expect a good run. First run this far but looks to have the ability to win this. YOUR WORSHIP  is never far back and is a distance specialist. DISCOURSE ran his best race in a long time last time when finding a very strong finish over the same distance. Needs to repeat. BATTLE HAMMER loses ground at the start but finishes well. Has run second this C & D.

1st - NEW FORT (5); 2nd - GOLDEN HIGH (1); 3rd - YOUR WORSHIP (8); 4th - DISCOURSE (6); 5th - BATTLE HAMMER (9)

RACE 5: THEKWINI STAKES (Grade 1) - CHESTNUTS N PEARLS could win second Grade 1 in four starts

Because the race was moved from last week to today, the two year old race for fillies is effectively a race for three year olds, be it by only a day. That should not have any bearing on the outcome of this race. There are some highly talented two year old fillies participating in this race. CHESTNUTS N PEARLS won the Grade 1 Golden Slipper at this track on July Day. She received good support that day and did not disappoint her backers and won impressively by 1,5 lengths despite starting at wide odds of 16/1. She will see out the extra 200m from last time. Trainer Dennis Drier, who had an excellent July Day, could continue with his Grade 1 success, with the daughter of HORSE CHESTNUT. Sean Cormack who has ridden her in all three runs thus far, will be in the saddle once more. Watch for yet another good late finish this afternoon. She has won just over R420 000 in three starts.

OLD EM ran a very good post maiden against weaker last time but she could be the big improver in this lineup. All three of her runs have been at Turffontein. The daughter of TRIPPI will prefer this trip and on what we have seen in her last two runs suggests that she will a few races this coming season. She has yet to be tested at this level but could be worth a small investment in the places. Craig Zackey rides for champion trainer for the season, Sean Tarry.

PERSIAN RUG is unbeaten after two starts. She won very well last time despite casting a shoe. She looks to have scope and impressed in both starts. She won well at this track when she made her debut in April. She has started both races rather slowly but finished far more rapidly. This will be her first run in this type of field but is still improving. S'Mango Khumalo rides for Mike De Kock. He rode her to victory last time.

FLYING ICE is also unbeaten after two starts. She won a small feature at this track last time. Even though she too has shown ability in both starts, she takes on far stronger today. Expect another honest run and she looks to have the ability to earn something.

MELLIFLORA finished almost four lengths behind CHESTNUTS N PEARLS last time. At level weights it appears unlikely that she will be able to change the order. She has won since then and that was an impressive win. She has ability and three runs back won this C & D. The Mike Azzie yard has had a fantastic KZN Winter Season. One to keep an eye on.

1st - CHESTNUTS N PEARLS (2); 2nd - OLD EM (10); 3rd - PERSIAN RUG (11); 4th - FLYING ICE (3); 5th - MELLIFLORA (9)

RACE 6: PREMIERS CHAMPION STAKES (Grade 1) - RABADA looking to keep unbeaten record

Each horse in this field takes on stronger making the playing fields level. The unbeaten two year old son of BRAVE TIN SOLDIER, RABADA, will be looking to keep his unbeaten record. He has won both his starts impressively and the extra should suit. Gauteng trainer, Mike Azzie, has done really well in KZN this winter and this could continue this afternoon. he does take on stronger but the way in which he won both starts is encouraging. Jockey Anton Marcus has ridden him in both starts and has the ride again this afternoon.

MOGOK MASTER was not disgraced when a close up fourth in the Golden Horseshoe at this track last time. He ran on well that day and should challenge if repeating. His latest run was meritorious as he was drawn widest and was probably closer to Marriott Road that the inside running rail.

PROSPECT STRIKE ran a good third behind SEVENTH PLAIN in the Grade 1 Gold Medallion at Scottsville three runs back despite racing green. He raced well when winning full of running by almost five lengths at Turffontein last time and makes the trip back down the N3, this time to Greyville, a track he races on for the first time.

CUTTING EDGE won well in a feature race over shorter on July Day last time. he ran on very well that day and should go close, especially over the extra distance.

CAPTAIN'S CAUSEWAY made a winning debut on the Vaal sand last time. He was well supported on debut and must be highly thought of to have been entered in a Grade 1 in his immediate post maiden run.  The progeny of CAPTAIN AL have been on a winning streak in recent months.

1st - RABADA (12); 2nd - MOGOK MASTER (8); 3rd - PROSPECT STRIKE (11); 4th - CUTTING EDGE (3); 5th - CAPTAIN'S CAUSEWAY (2)

RACE 7: eLAN PROPERTY GROUP GOLD CUP (Grade 1) - HOT TICKET could be hot number

HOT TICKET ran into problems in the Vodacom Durban July four weeks ago and ultimately ran twelfth in that race but still only just over six lengths back. That was a good run to his stable companion, POWER KING, who won that race for the Dean Kannemeyer yard. His last win came in July 2014 when he won the Gold Vase over 3000m. He followed that up with a good fourth in this race a year ago when finishing less than three lengths behind WAVIN' FLAG. Two runs back he was pipped on the line in the Derby over 2400m at Scottsville. The Dean Kannemeyer yard is in exceptionally hot form this winter and the Cape Town conditioner, could take the spoils back to the Mother City come Monday morning. This six year old son of SILVANO is sure to have a good run and is taken to win a competitive event. Karl Neisius, who has ridden him to victory on four previous occasions, has the ride.

Another Cape Town trained horse, COLTRANE, has yet to realise his far superior Cape Town form in KZN. Whether now will be the time remains to be seen. Piere Strydom rode him last time in the Lonsdale at Greyville. He has ridden him for victory when in Cape Town. He has won over the distance and has proved himself to be a classy stayer who already has two feature races under his belt, namely the Cape Summer Stayers over 2500m and the Chairmans Cup over 3200m, both at Kenilworth. The Joey Ramsden inmate must have a definite chance.

Don't ignore the chances of the Sean Tarry trained GOLD ONYX. He has not won a race in twenty two months but has contested some good races since that win. He has been running far better than his current form may suggest. He did finish close up to FUTURA in both the Grade 1 Queen's Plate and J & B Met. On those two runs alone he must have a decent shout. His latest effort was in the Vodacom Durban July last time. That is a difficult race to assess for GOLD ONYX as he finished eight lengths behind POWER KING after having been badly hampered in the race. He finished third in this race, only half a length behind WAVIN' FLAG.

KINGSTON MINES won two feature races in Cape Town at the beginning of the year, namely the J & B Stayers over 2800m and the Caradoc Gold Cup. His staying ability has never been in question. He showed a great return to form last time when wearing blinkers for the first time. He finished a close up third to DISCO AL in the Gold Circle Derby at Scottsville over 2400m. He will be in with a definite shout and the Mike De Kock yard will be wishing for a good end to a disappointing KZN Winter Season.

Another Joey Ramsden trained horse with a winning chance is DISCO AL. He had been lurking in the background for pretty much a long time before he won well last time, but over a shorter distance. That was a great run and could repeat again this afternoon. Another challenger could be WILD ONE who finished only half a length back in second in this race last year.

1st - HOT TICKET (2); 2nd - COLTRANE (4); 3rd -GOLD ONYX (1); 4th - KINGSTON MINES (8); 5th - DISCO AL (6)

RACE 8: CHAMPIONS CUP (Grade 1) - The much awaited clash between FUTURA and LEGISLATE to draw the curtain on the Grade 1's for this season

This has to be one of the most awaited clashes during this year's KZN Winter Season. The two stable companions, FUTURA and LEGISLATE, should fight this out over the 1800m. Last year's winner of the race, FUTURA, finished a very good fourth in the Vodacom July four weeks ago. That was a very good run under top weight. he is a class act and should run well again this afternoon and will be looking to emulate his run in this race last year. Interesting to remember that he did win both the J & B Met and Queen's Plate in Cape Town earlier in the year.

ICE MACHINE could come between the two Justin Snaith runners. He was finding a good finish in the July. he did win the Grade 1 Drill Hall Stakes almost three months ago. Jockey Anton Marcus has an excellent record when aboard ICE MACHINE. In the seven runs he partnered him, he has won five of them with two seconds. His record does show one win over today's distance.

Las season's Horse of the Year, LEGISLATE, ran a great race in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint two weeks ago. With 300m to go he looked very much as though he were going to win the race. The postponement of the race for one week may have played into his hands. Expect another very good run. He ran on strongly to beat WILLOW MAGIC in the Gold Challenge over 1600m at this track the run before that.

Most racing enthusiasts would love nothing better than to see Cape Town trainer, Stan Elley, win his last Grade 1 race as a trainer in an illustrious career. PUNTA ARENAS ran a great race in the Vodacom Durban July last time and was just pipped by POWER KING in a powerful driving finish to the line. At the weights would battle to finish ahead of FUTURA again.

WILLOW MAGIC has very good form and ran second to LEGISLATE in the Gold Challenge two months ago. Looks to have a chance at the weights against LEGISLATE.

1st - FUTURA (1); 2nd - ICE MACHINE (3); 3rd - LEGISLATE (2); 4th - PUNTA ARENAS (7); 5th - WILLOW MAGIC (8)

RACE 9: GOLD BRACELET (Grade 2) - GALLICA ROSE aims to win final feature race for the season

The final feature race of the day draws the curtain on the 2014/15 Season . The Joey Ramsden trained GALLICA ROSE won this C & D in May. She won very comfortably that day and could repeat again this afternoon. her form either side of the win has been good. Jockey Bernard Fayd'Herbe has had very good success with this five year old daughter of SILVANO. In the seven times that he has ridden her she has won three times and placed second the same number of times. She should be running on again. She is drawn very wide but over 2000m that should not pose too many problems.

AMBER ORCHID has very good form, especially over shorter. One cannot ignore her chances on form, trainer and jockey. She shows plenty of heart. The blinkers made an impact last time and they are on again this afternoon.

ESTIDRAAJ has promised so much since she started racing in November last year. She has contested some top races, particularly in Johannesburg. The Mike De Kock yard will be looking for a good close to their season. Her only win came early on in her career, on the polytrack.

PATCHIT UP BABY ran well in both Oaks, the one at Turffontein and the other at Scottsville finishing third and fourth respectively. She may be more effective over slightly shorter but her chances should not be ignored. ZANTE is never far back. It would be fitting were jockey Gavin Lerena, winner of the Jockey's title for 2014/15, were to win the final feature race of the season.

1st - GALLICA ROSE (4); 2nd - AMBER ORCHID (7); 3rd - ESTIDRAAJ (14); 4th - PATCHIT UP BABY (13); 5th - ZANTE (12)

RACE 10:

UNCLE TOMMY did stay on last time at the Vaal sand and has run well over this C & D before. He has won before over the distance. Could be good value. NIGHT TRIP will be doing his best work late and is never far behind. With a win under his belt over this C & D does pose a real threat and should be one of the early fancies. FOREST FOX has shown small improvement in KZN. Must have a money chance with Piere Strydom aboard. BOLD INSPIRATION could be finding form again. M L JET is another one who could sneak into the minor placings.

1st - UNCLE TOMMY (2); 2nd - NIGHT TRIP (1); 3rd - FOREST FOX (6); 4th - BOLD INSPIRATION (5); 5th - M L JET (4)

RACE 11:

ROY'S GODDESS could cause the upset on an improved latest run. He normally weakens but the 1000m could suit again. One to watch! BLACK VELVET has steady form and ran against stronger last time. CATALUGA makes her KZN debut. Has good Gauteng form and both wins have been over the distance of today's race. HERE WE ARE is holding form well and will be running on at the business end. EASY GAME drops in class and has been having a good time in Durban. Ideally distance suited.

1st - ROY'S GODDESS (9); 2nd - BLACK VELVET (7); 3rd - CATALUGA (3); 4th - HERE WE ARE (8); 5th - EASY GAME (1)

RACE 12:

BARBOSA has some good form and loves the distance. TIGER TERRITORY won this C & D last time despite a slow start. Ran on well. SARVE had to work hard to win last time. BRUTAL FORCE was unlucky last time. Can make amends. MOOFEED has been expensive to follow in recent times. Capable on his day. Drops in class.

1st - BARBOSA (1); 2nd - TIGER TERRITORY (7); 3rd - SARVE (6); 4th - BRUTAL FORCE (3); 5th - MOOFEED (4)
