PREMIERS CHAMPION STAKES (Grade 1) - RABADA holds on gamely to repel challengers
The Mike Azzie two year old son of BRAVE TIN SOLDIER, RABADA, had to work hard to maintain his unbeaten record in the second Grade 1 race of eLAN GOLD CUP DAY. This was his stiffest test to date and the first time that he has faced the "mile" distance.
Gauteng trainer Michael Azzie had a strong hand in this race and he made no secret of the fact that he was going to use HIGH GAME to ensure a good pace for RABADA. HIGH GAME did set the pace with RABADA always handily in either second or third. PROSPECT STRIKE, another Gauteng runner, vied for that second spot.
RABADA who had won both previous starts by an average of four lengths, held on this time by half a length. This was a further distance. He is one to respect in other features in both Johannesburg and Cape Town during the respective Summer Seasons.
One has to keep an eye on the third Mike Azzie trained horse in this race, ABASHIRI who won on debut last time and flew late on. He is highly rated by the yard and is reported to be able to stay with RABADA.
The win, his third from three starts has pushed his earnings beyond the R500 000.
