MARIA CONTINUES TO AMAZE WITH SECOND CONSECUTIVE GROUP 1 WIN

AMAZING MARIA (IRE) won her second consecutive Group 1 when winning the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Sunday. Successful in the Falmouth Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting last time out, she beat Coronation Stakes and French Guineas heroine Ervedya into second in her latest victory. Held up midfield by Olivier Peslier, she was shaken up under a furlong and a half out, running on to steal the lead in the final 120 yards and was driven out to beaten the aforementioned French filly by a length and a quarter, with the same margin back to Group 2 winner Bawina (IRE) in third. Trainer David O'Meara mentioned the Matron Stakes at Irish Champions Weekend as her next possible target, where she might clash with Saturday's Nassau Stakes winner Legatissimo (IRE).

Bred in Ireland by owner Sir Robert Ogden, she is from the same crop of Mastercraftsman (IRE)'s other Group 1 winners The Grey Gatsby (IRE) and Kingston Hill. Standing at Coolmore Stud at a fee of €40,000, Mastercraftsman (IRE) now has 12 Group winners and six Listed winners on his CV. Amazing Maria (IRE)'s three-year-old half-sister by Rip Van Winkle (IRE) has finished second on her two starts for the same connections.

Another Irish stallion to enjoy a Stakes winner at the Deauville meeting was Canford Cliffs (IRE), whose daughter AKTORIA won the Prix Six Perfections a day earlier. Irish stallions sired the first three home in the seven furlong contest, with Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) and Clodovil (IRE) siring the second and third respectively. It was the third Stakes winner for Coolmore's freshman sire, with the others being Group 2 winner Painted Cliffs (IRE) and Group 3 winner Most Beautiful. The son of Tagula (IRE) stands for a fee of €12,500 and currently enjoys a 50% strike rate in Stakes races and a 41% strike rate overall.

Meanwhile on Sunday at Chester, EASTERN IMPACT (IRE) took advantage of a significant drop in class to land the Listed Queensferry Stakes over six furlongs, having previously run third in the Group 1 July Cup. The progressive type is a five-time winner and first moved into Group level this season when beaten just a length in a Group 3 contest in June. Bred by Airlie Stud, the four-year-old gelding was sold as a foal at Goffs for €24,000 and is a half-brother to Ger Lyons' promising juvenile Miss Katie Mae (IRE), runner-up in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes last month at The Curragh. Their dam won for Airlie Stud's Anthony Rogers as a juvenile and is a half-sister to Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Sprint winner Bossy Guest (IRE), who went on to finish fourth behind Gleneagles (IRE) in the 2,000 Guineas and third in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
